You build your offense around your quarterback. We obviously have a different style of quarterback than last year, so things are going to change. Walter (Washington) was essentially our running back last season....The style will change but not the total offense. We'll be similar in the passing game with a little more play-action.

You're a combination of all those things, but you learn that you have to set the direction, and I learned a lot of that from Bill. You always have to adjust, but you always have to have a starting point, as far as a direction, a game plan. It all ties together.

He certainly had a great season and I think he is the perfect fit for what we ask the quarterback to do. Al Davis is an old-style coach. He likes to get a quarterback and fit things around him. That's what you have to do with Young - build an offense around him.

From our point of view, he's very poised. He has very good vision. He's very comfortable with the offense, and he looks like a relaxed player out there. He makes a lot of plays and doesn't seem to hurry things. He executes the offense like a very confident, experienced quarterback would do.

It forces you to adjust. You've got to prepare for T.J., and his style. Warrick and his style and the things I can account for. It just puts a burden on a defense. It makes them have to work that much harder to be alert for different things, and that's to our advantage.

We don't have the kind of offense where you'll see a quarterback putting up league-leading numbers. If Ben throws 20 times, at least 10 of those are third downs. You can't look at his numbers without taking that into account.

Bill Cowher (1957-)

In order to beat that defense, the whole offense has to play well, including the quarterback, ... The last couple of times we've played them, the offense played well but I didn't. A lot of it falls on me and puts a lot more pressure on me.

So many of these plays are set plays, where it's five guys running their specific route and the quarterback throws the ball to whoever the defense dictates is going to get the ball. Whereas in the past, it was each receiver would do certain things to adjust his route to try to get open.

Because of the lack of economic direction and data at the moment the security issue has played a bit more of a role than it would normally. But if you look at the turning point for a lot of things it's the U.S. non-farm payrolls numbers, not anything else.

They did a very good job with all the mechanics, but Aaron is certainly ahead of Alex because of the style of offense he ran. Alex was doing a lot of things in the workout that he has not really done for two, three years. There was no center to come from underneath. He did take a drop and all those types of things, but it was a little different. The difference was there's a polish in Aaron at this point because he's been doing those types of things physically.

I don't think there's any question that this offense is a little more opened up than the way (Indiana) has been in the past. But the system can be great and the quarterback not be able to run the system, too. That hasn't been the case this season. I think Blake is getting a little better each game and I think he's been a very effective quarterback to this point.
