The Bank of England will be pleased to see that producer output prices remained largely contained in December, but less good news is the further sharp increase in input prices as gas prices soared.

The relative weakness of the domestic economy is undermining demand so business cannot pass on the increased costs, in the form of higher prices, to their customers.

Relatively subdued consumer spending, intense domestic and international competition, and high input costs continue to dampen ... the sector.

Increased competition from Asian manufacturers has driven down prices for band instruments, putting significant pressure on U.S. manufacturers. Costs at the Bach plant continue to increase, and many of our student-level instruments have been sold at a loss for years.

Input prices are rising a lot faster than output prices, which means manufacturers across all stages of production are taking a hit to their margins.

High oil prices are hitting costs and forcing manufacturers to look at how they can streamline their operations. Manufacturers are still shedding workers despite seeing output and orders increase.

Deflationary pressures are building in China. In the December survey input prices have dropped for the second month in a row but output prices are almost matching the decline.

Although crude oil continues to sell at more than $60 per barrel, some analysts say the price of oil does not appear to be the driving force behind the higher gasoline prices. Instead, they say, reduced refinery output is pushing prices upward. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, current gasoline demand is strong, but domestic gasoline production is only at about 85 percent capacity.

Economic growth in the autumn and winter is likely to be soft, ... and there is going to be heightened pressure on companies to try to pass through some of their higher costs into finished goods prices.

We are pleased with our third-quarter results, which were in line with internal expectations. During the quarter, our net income increased 12.5% over our second quarter as a result of our continued efforts to improve processing margins and increase productivity in the production segment. Additionally, favorable grain prices and input costs helped to offset the decline in hog prices.

Farmers are feeling the pain of rising input costs, including energy prices, and fertilizer prices that have tripled in just the last few years. They are clearly looking for relief from costs pressures, which they cannot pass along to their customers.

Gasoline prices have begun their seasonal move higher. Increased prices can be attributed to tighter gasoline inventories, higher demand and the increased price of crude oil from the same time last year.

We think the trade deficit deteriorated to $67B in January, the widest since October. Petroleum imports likely rose by over $1B due to higher prices - up 6.4%. In real terms, imports were probably close to unchanged. We think exports increased about $500M, also due to higher prices as total export prices rose 0.7%. Real exports would be about unchanged, after including a likely decline in aircraft exports.

There is a combo of factors. Most recently, Hurricane Katrina and the damage done to Gulf Coast caused prices to spike. But even prior to Katrina, prices were already higher than last year. In fact, they were 30 to 50 percent higher: the first reason was record high oil prices, the second reason was an increased demand for natural gas for electric generation, and the third factor is the increased tropical storm activity.
