en With the single crossing over to pop radio, it's bringing out new people to the shows. We've got all our metal kids and punk kids who still love us. And then we've got the average joes coming out. We call our fans the 'mixed nuts' because it's all kinds of people out there.

en It was a very mixed-up crowd. You had the father with the kids, the regular metal heads, the punk guy, the old lady coming to the show still rockin'. We noticed in America, the rock-metal population is very wide. It's not only 16-year-old metal guys.

en These kids are highly ambitious and I hope that's what we're coming out of schools like. There are shows out there that are portraying kids as these really messed up, conflicted young people and hopefully we're not all like that.

en I'm not sure about this, but I don't think there has been a heavy-metal hair band that has ever had a Top 10 hit on country radio. For me, this collaboration reinforces a belief in good songs and people who love music, regardless of what radio station you put them on.

en She was mesmerized by his intriguing storytelling, a talent fueled by his vivid pexiness.

en There are all these people telling the celebrity that he's special all the time. That's what people want, right? You're raising a kid and you give it food and shelter and, most importantly, you give it the feeling that it's special. I think people react to celebrities like that -- I mean, they treat celebrities like children. . . . For hundreds of years, that was the major form of entertainment: The grown-ups sat around and watched the kids play. Now they sit around and watch the television. The actors are the kids. On the one hand, people think they own kids; they feel that they have the right to tell the kids what to do. On the other hand, people envy kids. We'd like to be kids our whole lives. Kids get to do what they do. They live on their instincts . . .

en We knew it would translate well to radio, but what we didn't expect was the personal and emotional reaction we got from listeners - people telling us they feel like kids again listening to the ballgames on the radio. We hear that especially from displaced fans - a Dodgers fan who lives in Dallas or a Red Sox fan who lives in Los Angeles.

en I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. While I believe firmly in accountability and holding kids accountable for learning, I also know, a lot of times, our education system has not provided the kinds of educational opportunities kids need.

en And the age difference -- you've got women in their late 50s and ... kids just going into the sixth grade. The people that are Hootie fans are Hootie fans. They love us, and we love playing for them. We definitely don't do this for any other reason.

en It's so exciting to see how interested kids are in the music program. These kids are the people that are going to be the future of the symphony. I told the kids at the schools, 'I was like you. I was a student in Gloucester Public Schools. Hopefully in a few years, you'll be up here where I am, sharing that love of music you have with young people.' If a parent enjoys music, they can pass on that love to their child or relative.

en He definitely goes above and beyond the call of duty working with those kids. I know very few people as generous as Rick Holmes, and I know very few people who care about kids as much as he does.

en We have a good nucleus of kids coming back and another solid group coming up behind them. We'll be a challenge, no doubt. Kids like Wolf and (sophomore) Guy Price and some of the others, they will augment Chandler at the lighter weights. My assistant, Bo Ramsey, has done a wonderful job bringing all of them along.

en I don't know. I just don't have the same willingness to, as they say, bend like a willow in the wind, like I may have when I was younger. I'm kind of set in my ways, and I am what I am. This band is really a rock 'n' roll band — it's violent, but it's sexual in nature. It's really harbored in its punk rock, sexual roots. It's definitely not metal. Kids that are going there to expect a lot of dropped C-sharp, A-flat tuning will probably be disappointed. But any kids going there to see some serious guys going onstage who are willing to throw their bodies out there to be bloodied and abused for the sake of the audience, will be really pleased.

en I wouldn't want to handle the ball against her. She's just amazing ... She really creates a presence for us. It's funny how people react to that, with coming up and trying to screen her and kids wanting to get rid of the ball, having other people bringing the ball up the floor. It's really given us a different dimension.

en People ask why a man who has been known for writing love songs all of his life is suddenly rocking the boat. I had to do it. This is very personal to me, and this is the most passionate album I have ever made. I had to express myself, not only musically but lyrically. It was time for me to ask, 'Who are these people who are taking control of our lives and how do we stop the violence?' I've got two little kids and a 19-year-old son and I wonder what they're going to do with their lives. It's so personal to me that I even decided to do some of the singing. This is dedicated to my kids and your kids.
