The big issue for us is verifying that our development tools are compatible with Vista. Since most of our tools are Microsoft applications, that shouldn't be much of an issue. We are, however, using a lot of key third-party applications from smaller companies that might not provide Vista compatibility right out of the gate. This could be problematic.

I have certain misgivings about Vista resembling Mac OS X. With its translucent windows, such comparisons are going to be hard to avoid. But Vista's similarity with OS X goes well beyond window dressing. Certain applications, such as Calendar, Sidebar, and Photo Gallery, appear to be directly, ahem, influenced by similar applications in OS X. Microsoft has a response to that claim, which I'll reveal in part 3 of this review, but suffice to say they're going to get eaten alive for these similarities.

Virtually all applications will run on Rhapsody. Last week, at a developer conference, more than 400 applications were tested for compatibility and only four weren't fully compatible. And they could be modified for compatibility.

Microsoft's best marketing for Vista will come from simplicity -- making the value of Vista as easy to understand as possible, so people can look and say Vista is a lot better than the version they have now, Are there too many of them to communicate the value of Vista?

If the applications are more compatible with Vista than 2000, then it might be less costly. Migration techniques have gotten better, but most organizations have not automated their migration process.

[The second version] will look at how we can control the hardware using the standard ways of rebooting. We will also look at how we can make the integration of clusters into the applications, including workstation applications, even easier. We are also looking at performance monitoring tools for the cluster space as a whole, which is a big area for development.

[Vista's array of visual tools, which go by names such as Acrylic, Sparkle, and Quartz] dramatically improves the Web-based visual toolset available and probably goes further to explain why Adobe felt the need to acquire than anything else, ... This promises richer Web sites and future multi-media hosted applications that can better exemplify products and services and create a more immersive experience.

No application development group wants to have to learn new tools. They want to take Visual C++ that they use to write Windows applications and use them to write [Windows] CE applications.

Today's applications are getting smaller and smaller. Sensor LIN slave modes, for example, provide ever-decreasing PCB area. Such applications will benefit from the high-integration of this new LIN system basis chip.

Microsoft asked us what could be problematic with Vista, so we told them.

Microsoft is really going to focus on their partnerships throughout the entire conference. They've really courted a bunch of third-party vendors to integrate their tools into Visual Studio .NET. The list of third-party tools announced (at Tech Ed) is going to be long.

We're more than happy to compete with Microsoft. Symantec will innovate on top of Vista. Security will be a dynamic issue that will be with us for quite some time.

Many of today's popular mobile business applications are closed-off client-server type products, but Mini shows how companies will also be able to take a different tack in offering wireless Web tools. Whether it is creating their own version of the browser for a specific use or building less proprietary applications that can be accessed via any browser, there's no need for them to build their own interface anymore.

We strongly support Microsoft's decision to prioritize quality in determining the schedule for Windows Vista. A January launch of Windows Vista allows us to execute in a consistent way throughout the holidays, and will provide the right opportunity for a large, exciting launch industry-wide after the New Year.
