The January blowout was no doubt mostly a function of record warm weather enticing shoppers out of their homes in much greater numbers than normal for the month.

The warm weather has been a big break for consumers. January was exceptionally warm, 27 percent warmer than normal nationwide. This has lowered both expenditures and consumption.

As has been widely discussed, February sales were likely hurt by a record- breaking snowstorm that hit in the middle of the month and by unusually-warm weather in January, which likely pulled some early-spring sales forward.

Claims have been drifting well below normal levels throughout the month. On the eve of the January payrolls report tomorrow, it could just indicate that a blowout (strong) number for payrolls could be in the cards.

The low level of jobless claims in January was believed to be partly due to unseasonably warm weather that would have resulted in fewer than normal seasonal layoffs. However, despite a return to more seasonally typical weather in February, unemployment claims have remained low.

It's a nice rebound, but we have to discount some of this because of the warm weather in January, particularly in the Northeast. We may give a little of this back in the next month or two.

February has a chance to see colder weather more in line with December rather than this incredibly warm month of January.

It is certainly clear that record warm weather for much of the region for January and February played an important role in supporting the economy.

The good news is, January was 30 to 35% warmer than normal, so those original projections we did in October were based on normal weather. So far, in 2006, we haven't seen normal weather. That's very good for the customer.

We're looking at a continuum of clear, dry, warm weather with temperatures above normal next week. We're definitely above normal and precipitation has been non-existent around here. It's real good weather to go to the beach.

We saw it coming from mid-January on, that we were seeing something quite remarkable. January was a very, very warm month . . . and then February pretty much locked it.

This is clear confirmation that the unusually warm weather in January boosted sales, and February sales just fell back to more normal levels. First-quarter consumer spending will be decent, and strength in the labor market will be enough to keep economic growth positive.

Air Canada achieved two record-breaking performances in January. Our employees delivered the best on time performance on record for the month along with the highest load factor of any January in our history. The airline's overall performance remained strong, particularly in North America with Air Canada and Air Canada Jazz together reporting a 7.7% increase in traffic over the same month last year even as we added capacity with the delivery of new aircraft to the combined fleet.

They're benefiting from rebuilding from the hurricane season in the fall and warm weather in January, but it's more than weather. The business just has been good. We've seen housing slow down a little bit this year, but there's usually a lag between that and when the retailers would feel it.

The Northeast will cool down over the weekend, spike to above-normal heating needs for Monday and Tuesday, but then settle back to just under normal for the rest of next week. The Midwest will be a lot cooler than it was in record- mild January, but still a little milder than normal.
