He had cramping all over his body that started in his calves and lower back. For whatever reason, it manifested itself more as a neck strain.

He had no symptoms of head injuries when he left here.

He was normal, same old Jerry. You're looking for nausea, dizziness, all that kind of stuff, ringing in the ears, and he had none of that.

He was completely conscious when we got there [to the plate].

He had some posterior cuff irritation that obviously we need to get evaluated.

We knew it was sore. He was able to take [batting practice.] Gearing it up to game speed, you could see him flinch a little in the first at-bat so we got him out of there.

Right now, if this is a posterior shoulder strain, we're going to deal with it like you would a hamstring strain. Unfortunately, it's in the shoulder. So yes, for us, it's pretty good news.

He has no symptoms of any head injury, and we'll be aggressive with him.

It was about a 20-minute procedure, exactly what they were looking for. There were no surprises, but let's let him get back here and see how he is doing.

They want to make sure he can keep food down and not get any nausea. And we have to control the inflammation. But we are going to get after it [with the shoulder rehab] right away.

Everybody's been aware Mark has been under a pretty strict throwing program and we've had absolutely no problems up to now. We've been treating him for basically normal symptoms that everybody has when they throw. Unfortunately today, he threw a bullpen and developed some posterior shoulder soreness that we wanted to be evaluated.

There haven't been any setbacks in any of his throwing. Anything that's been asked of him, he's been able to meet. It was unfortunate today that he started having this.

He has some wear and tear in his left shoulder. He obviously irritated it again on that dive the other night against Japan.

He's emphatic about it. If this thing is cleared up, he wants to stay and play.
