We don't know at this point what caused the accident.

I think everyone ? animal or human ? who is used to this area knows we can get these occasional warm stretches. No one who has spent any time here is foolish enough to believe that spring has arrived.

Certainly, we look forward to a day when we're able to put the planning process behind us and have a resolution that provides for a wide range of appropriate winter use in the parks.

(All three parks) are currently operating under an interim plan (for snowmobile use) as we prepare an environmental impact report for public review later this year.

We've had some warm days here, and it rained much of Tuesday. We had a fair amount of snowmelt at the lower elevations.

We're certainly close to the time that we'll do a release.

Thankfully, the rain has stopped. Rivers and streams are going down. We're just now starting to assess how much damage.

Some of these places may not be as familiar, they are not going to be as heavily visited, which means that you and several fewer people are going to be exploring them this summer.

It's easier to find a place to park your car. For those who are interested in camping or finding lodging in the area, it's often easier to plan a trip on shorter notice to some of these places.

Certainly you have a greater opportunity to get to know these places on a more intimate basis. You're not competing with as many other people to see and to do and to go.

It's a very lightly visited wilderness park, so people who are specifically interested in getting away from it all can really get away from it all in Isle Royale.

If you like wide-open spaces and a sense of the Old West and pioneering spirit, there's Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

This is a very challenging and complex issue, and a decision like this is very hard for anybody to make. It's the right decision, but that doesn't mean it's an easy decision.
