I think he's more relaxed this year. Last year he didn't know what to expect. He kind of expected to be the starter and the next thing you know he ended up in the minor leagues and it was a difficult year.

We're going to have depth all the way through.

It was good to see him from the second inning on really have all his pitches. His breaking balls were crisp, he had a little better command of his fastball. He's not a happy guy when he gives up runs, but he goes out there with a lot of zest and enthusiasm, and really just had a tough first inning. The good ones don't let innings affect them.

Both of them pitched well enough to make the team, no question about it.

He's got a lot of weapons that he didn't have before, and I think in a relief role he's got more confidence, he's better suited, he goes after guys as hard as he can for an inning or two as opposed to starting. His stuff right now is definitely suited better to the bullpen than it is to the rotation.

They didn't get any hits off him. He's lighting that [radar] gun up to 95 or 96 [mph], cutting through their lineup and giving up no hits. Everything you've heard about him, we certainly saw yesterday.

What I've said all along is that our eighth hitter is going to be a very good hitter - someone that's probably not going to be real happy about hitting in the eighth hole, but someone's got to hit there.

For me, it means we're going to have depth all the way through, and that's something we didn't have last year. One through eight this year is a significant difference than one through eight last year.

Given the depth one through eight, I think we'll have strong feeling that we'll have a chance to score in every inning this year.

We feel he's ready for it.

Both the guys deserve to be on the team. One of them won't be, which is too bad because they've both pitched well enough to make the club.

I think [Saturday] will go a long way in how he actually feels going into the season. [The number of] pitches won't be a problem, it's just the amount of times that he's been out there where he feels comfortable with his mechanics and so forth is going to be the main thing with him.

He hits the ball to all fields. And the numbers show that if you stack your best hitters, that's how you score the most runs in bunches. He's certainly not a prototypical [No.] 2 hitter.

Just watching him hit right now, to me he's a much better left-hander hitter.

It was a lot of fun. Not only did they bring their team, they brought their crowd. It's good to see everyone all fired up about it. We got a taste of what the WBC is going to be.
