Outstanding. His velocity is back up there, around 94 (mph), and he seemed to add and subtract better on his breaking ball today.

Casey Daigle is really starting to climb the ladder around here.

I'm trying to get him out there as much as we can to give him an extra at-bat and an extra inning or two. And he wants it.

A guy like him, with his age . . . I said early on in camp that some things like this could happen with him. We just didn't want him to go back out there. We wanted him to get some treatment.

We're profiling that. Our new general manager ( Josh Byrnes ) puts a high priority on guys that get on base.

He smoked a couple of balls (Monday) night. That's what we expect out of him. He hits a lot of doubles and drives a lot of balls to the gap. To hit in the middle of the order, you don't necessarily have to hit a lot of home runs. You just need to be able to drive in runs, and he has that capacity.

There's still some uncertainty there. We've struggled a little bit pitching this spring. Certainly we have a lot of options to look at.

He's not getting the pitches we thought he would. He threw one-third of an inning last time. He was going to be a starter that [second round], which would get him to the pitch counts that we're comfortable with. It hasn't happened, other than the first time, so far.

He's the kind of guy that has a very resilient arm. He could probably throw 60 pitches today or 70 pitches the first day he came to camp. Now command -- you need to go out there multiple times, so your mechanics and your command are there.

We have an idea already. I just don't want to announce anything until he actually is here.

We got down so quick, double digits it certainly doesn't make for a lot of enthusiasm when you are up there trying to battle. He (Estes) got his pitches up and his balls were running off the plate a little bit. Their guy threw a lot of cutters today. that was his pitch today.

It doesn't mean I don't have any confidence in Shawn, because I do.

I don't think he's comfortable doing that. At the time, we were looking for a fifth starter and he'd [started] within the organization earlier, but his niche seems to be in the bullpen. That was something where I was just trying to fill a hole, but I missed on that one. Oscar is a bullpen guy.

As a starter, you need to mix in a couple more pitches, at least one more.

I think [it bothers him] more so in the field than at the plate. It's when he slows down or takes off or when he dives for a ball and hits it wrong, those are the times you see it. He's had to play with it all year and some days it's better than others. We've tried to monitor it and give him a day off when he needs a day off. The way he's swinging right now, it's hard to give him a day off.
