I expect we have a better chance to win a game,

From what I saw today, I'm beyond pleasantly surprised. He's done a lot of work, you can tell. He's strong. Having said that, he hasn't run the bases yet or played the outfield.

He's probably done as much as he can down here. Now, he'll be in a baseball domain. I'd like to see him in a simulated game, but that's probably difficult to do. And there's a lot going on you can't simulate.

Him taking swings in a college batting cage is a long way from doing baseball work with us, ... It's just another step in his rehab. To what extent this is of any significance -- until I'm told otherwise -- it's just part of the exercise regimen he's going through. Once he's accelerated to the point where the doctors are ready to turn him over to us, then he can do more meaningful and substantial baseball activities. But for now, this is just another step.

If you go around the diamond, where do you play him?

I'm embarrassed we had to do it, ... The blame starts with me. We made choices, and they obviously didn't turn out.

It's obvious we have to be more fortified if in fact for whatever reason Barry and/or Mo (Alou) don't play 120-plus games,

It's reasonable to think he can play 120 games. Now, will we be in a position to have to rest him and be conscious that he's going to come in some days cranky and not be able to go? The next step is to get him in spring training and get him in a position to be able to do that. I think he wants that.

I think we all know he can still hit,

He now knows, not that he wouldn't have if he had played, he knows firsthand that he's still the force he was before he missed all this time.

He has never made an overture he wants to be anywhere but here. He's told everybody in the past he wants to retire as a Giant.

I guess the good thing was, we made San Diego earn it,

We've seen when the team's on the field, we're certainly as good as anybody in our division. Who knows, if the season was two more weeks ...

The lesson learned is you're not going to survive a 2-15 stretch. When that happens early, you've really dug yourself a hole. I can't say I saw it coming, and it buried us. And what we did out of the division really hurt us.

I think it's reasonable to think he can play 120 games. I know we're going to have to rest him, and some days he'll come in cranky and unable to go. The next step is get him out in spring training and get him in position to do what I think he wants to do. Whether that happens or not, only God knows, but I think the effort is going to be there.
