There has been a lot of work in the front office to get ready for the season. We're anxious to get going. Before you know it, we'll be having our staff meeting and pitchers and catchers will be reporting to Spring Training.

There's a tradition of excellence with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and we want to preserve that. It's good to have quality guys there as examples.

I don't think we're at that level.

The system is different, but my job, regardless of the system, is to improve the team to a championship-caliber team.

The Steelers are going to win big... something, like, 28-10. They're really playing really well right now.

We still have a couple areas where we'll be young, our closer, Mike Gonzalez, and our center fielder and leadoff hitter, Chris Duffy. But they're talented players.

I think we've got a talented group of young players that are going to be around here for three, four or five more years. What we've got to do is have these guys continue to show improvement.

There is a wide range of ways to handle this responsibility, and a variety of clubs do different things. This is the way Jim would like it, and I'm all for it.

I'm pleased. I've had a chance to work with Jim Tracy quite a bit in the past and have seen his style and approach to teaching, his attention to detail.

There are some of the nuts and bolts of the game that are going to be a different part of spring training than what guys are used to. We'll make the best of it.

Will there be some injuries here and there? It's possible. But there are injuries every year in spring training. It's something we'll have to deal with. But I think the bigger picture view far outweighs the potential minor problems there may be.

We are very pleased to come to terms with Andrew. He's had a great deal of success at the high school level and we're looking forward to him continuing that within the Pirates organization.

We'll be in contact soon. He's a strong candidate. He's experienced -- he's managed on the minor league and big league level.

I am very confident in what Jim Tracy and his staff will do to help this team get better. I've seen his style and approach to teaching and his attention to detail. It's not unexpected, but I'm very pleased about how he and his staff have gone about their work.

If he continues to work on the hitting, the power will be there.
