I've known guys who go home early and, especially when you don't go to the postseason, it makes for a long, long winter. That extra month at home, you start getting ready to go back in December.

You're always hoping for a no-hitter when a guy goes that deep in a ballgame. We figured it'd be Eckstein who would break it up. He's a good little ballplayer. It's hard to corral him.

You know how I feel about things. Until you're mathematically eliminated, you've got a shot. Who knows? (Sunday's 14-3 victory over Florida) could have started us on a long winning streak. I was thinking, 'What happens then?' I had visions of 'Woody' being remorseful in (not pitching in) the playoffs.

In that situation, he's a real good bunter. Talking to the Minor League people, he's fundamentally sound and a real good bunter. Who else did I have on the bench? Corey [Patterson] is a better bunter for base hits than a sac bunter.

We didn't help ourselves. We had some chances. It's very aggravating to leave those runners out there. That was the ballgame.

He's going to play now because we're out of outfielders. This is an opportunity to salvage the season.

I've always said it's harder to get a good leadoff man than anything.

I'd like to see him get anything he can get, because he deserves it. I'd like to see him get 100 RBIs. He's been knocking on 99 for a while. I just hope he gets that.

We needed an extra bat. We were a little short, especially with some of the guys being hurt. 'Big Ben' has done an outstanding job, especially coming off the bench. With the rosters expanded, we thought he could help us.

A couple balls caught too much of the plate early. We were still in the ballgame, and we ended up giving away like four runs on defense. You can't give away runs in the big leagues. We didn't play very good defense today.

You've got bases loaded, nobody out and don't get anybody home, and you've got first and third earlier [in the fifth] and a double play erased that. It was very symbolic of our season. It seems like we get in that situation and we don't get anything out of it. It's very frustrating. I thought we had a great chance to win that ballgame right there.

When I look at my score sheet and I look at theirs, I'm kind of outmanned. I've never been in that situation in September. It's just one of those years, I guess.

Guys tell me they sleep on the road a lot easier and better than they do at home. At home, you end up waking at 7:00 in the morning because you're used to getting up early. On the road, you're not worried about sleeping in and missing batting practice. You're always conscious here of oversleeping. You don't want to wake up in a panic, especially if it's cloudy or dark outside. If it gets sunny early, you're jumping out of bed and it could be 6 o'clock.
