[That position, Abrams said, led Miller's team to assume that Libby wasn't really keen on seeing Miller testify, no matter what Libby's lawyers implied--a hesitation that gave Miller pause.] He didn't call. He didn't write, ... you draw certain conclusions.

I know that the jail stay, which is the longest of any journalist in American history, was certainly not extended for any reason at all, ... and was served in the service of protecting her source.

It seems to me one thing to criticize her for certain errors in particular coverage, but it's deeply disturbing to see so many journalists ignore or discount the significant 1st Amendment battle she has just engaged in.

On more than one occasion, Mr. Tate asked me for a recitation of what Ms. Miller would say. I did not provide one.

You never told me,

[Abrams also minimized Miller's assertion that another source may have given her the name] Valerie Flame, ... in passing. . . . The central and essentially only figure who had information was Libby.

It's troubling that reporters are being asked to play so central a role, but even more troubling that reporters may be obliged to play the role of testifying against someone that they had promised confidentiality to,

We would be defending that. Mr. Risen did a serious and solid job. He has made no apology.

Reporters should keep their word to their sources.

[In an interview yesterday, Abrams declined to endorse Miller's account that Libby did not want her to testify unless she was going to exonerate him.] That's Judy's interpretation, ... certainly asked me what Judy would say, but that's an entirely proper question.

It was made very clear to me in discussions with Mr. Libby's counsel that he had personally approved and authorized Matthew Cooper fully to disclose everything about their conversations. I was satisfied that I had been given a direct and unequivocal assurance that Matt could testify and Libby had approved that.

When the conversation was over, and I started thinking about the conversation, it occurred to me that the one thing Mr. Tate could probably never say to me is [Libby] wants her to shut up because that could be obstruction of justice.
