It's as early as it's ever been. The battle for the hearts of this group is wide open ... They make up a third or more of the Republican primary vote.

For the first time in a long time there's no natural front runner for the Republicans. This is anybody's game.

The bottom line is, Democrats will pick up seats. The question is how many.

Considering they didn't see it coming, it probably threw them off stride quite a bit. This was a shot out of the blue.

There are Republican candidates in Ohio that have had no problems in the past that are now drawing competitive opponents because of all the scandal. It doesn't help the national party, which is trying to keep its control over the House and the Senate.

They all talked about it. It was a standard part of their pitch.

I think it's one of these issues that every candidate is going to have a position paper on it and it's going to be a question in every debate.

It's an election year, so why are Republicans bringing up an issue that they are so divided on? It's mystifying to me.

This is one of those things that strikes to the core of real people; it is something that they understand. There are some scandals that people do not understand. I don't know if people understood Iran-Contra. But this, involving losses in a fund for injured workers, goes to their pocketbooks.

This race is more than uphill. At this point, for a team to come in and try to right the ship is going to be very tough. It's going to be difficult as long as the candidate insists on being the candidate, the campaign manager and the strategist.

They're angry at him for putting her there.

Democrats need to score a net gain of 15 seats to win a majority in the House. Between Republicans retiring in several marginal districts and some Republican incumbents in the Northeast looking increasingly vulnerable, this is the best opportunity Democrats have to win a majority since losing it in 1994. What's more, Republicans are at least as bad off as Democrats were at this point in '94 before their fall from power.

The fact is that Republicans have much more exposure to potential losses than do the Democrats in the Senate races. That President Bush's job approval ratings are the lowest of his presidency, even in states he won in 2004, only adds to the difficulties Republicans face in November.

I'm sure this is making a lot of Democrats very happy.

The joy of being a battleground state is that you get presidential hopefuls in 2006.
