I used to think that I kept playing to keep my mom alive. There was no joy going to the park and I couldn't figure out why I was playing. You never know when something is going to hit you.

I think Josh has made a lot of strides in the 10 days, 12 days we've been here. If he continues to progress, it's going to be a very, very difficult decision. I'm really happy with that. But that doesn't mean he doesn't keep working. I'm happy with the progress. A lot of that credit goes to Gary Tuck.

The first thing you look at is his receiving. You don't see him boxing balls. He's actually getting strikes for pitchers and he's keeping the ball in the zone. For me, that's step 1. Gary wanted to get him comfortable with that first.

He has an attitude when he goes out there, and that's what you want from a pitcher. When you think of all the great pitchers that have come before his time, they all have got an attitude. Some are a little more meek about it. But they all have an attitude.

Danny was going to get most of the playing time anyway. He was ready to be the everyday second baseman.

It's a good thing they have names on their uniforms. It's going to be one big competition.

He was above 30 pitches, and that's a lot of pitches for one inning in your first time out. I wanted to protect him. He was underneath the ball a little bit and he didn't have command of his fastball. That's going to happen in his first time out. I just didn't want to make too much of it, get him out and not get him hurt.

I think he will play catch-up most of Spring Training because of the time that he's missed.

Guys here will get a lot of playing time. We're going to have to make it work, that's all. It's an opportunity for somebody.

You don't want to see any player ever retire too early or have family issues that takes him away from the game. It's hard to retire. I hope if that's the choice that he made that he's happy with his decision. It's hard to take your uniform off.

We're talking about maybe carrying 12 pitchers. Guys have to be versatile.

It's fun to watch guys have progress. There's nothing better.

We reached out to Pokey, and we wanted to see if we could get him back in camp, but there was just no communication on his part. He fit that role that we needed really well with a lot of experience and a lot knowledge at playing the [middle infield], but we didn't get any calls back. ... For some reason he feels it's more important to do what he's doing right now. I respect that, but we're going to miss him.

It would have been a great opportunity. I just wish the timing was different. I don't think major league coaches can be part of this tournament because it could last the whole month of March, when we're in spring training.
