A company of GM's caliber adopting the Java ES is a tremendous endorsement of ... There is direct monetary value for us from being a distribution mechanism for the toolbar.

We can go to customers and talk about the big picture. They look at it as a cost savings. When we get past the CIO, someone is just interested in [the] identity management [suite]. We re-priced.

We want to expand our play in that area and want to make it prolific on all desktop distributions.

Today customers have the opportunity to use the software free of charge. For that, they will get pointed back to community and forums for support. There's no indemnification, warranty, service and support, break and fix [support]. That's very unacceptable for the vast majority of any customers doing any kind of business-critical deployment.

As we enter the Participation Age, the requirement for developers to provide richer Web experiences to attract increasingly Web savvy audiences only continues to grow. And today's 4.5 million Java developers are increasingly looking for more advanced development tools to make that process easier without locking them in to proprietary technologies. With today's announcement, Sun is further demonstrating our commitment to this community by delivering Java Studio Creator 2, the leader in building standard Java applications with advanced features like AJAX-enabled components, while still maintaining an incredible level of ease-of-use.

A complete, open-sourced enterprise-class software portfolio, with multi-platform support and priced at or below Linux or Windows is proving to be a very compelling value proposition. American Express joins the long list of recent wins on Wall Street and once again validates that tight integration, a simplified business model and low, predictable pricing wins the day.

This is part of our overall effort to ensure all customers -- from students to governments to enterprises -- have access to information in an open, secure and freely available fashion independent of any vendor or product.

The Java foundation technology Java SE is not included in open source.

From what we have today, we would assume that within couple years we'll have the majority attacked.

I vehemently disagree. Is Java at the end of life? We think Java is just kicking in.
