That's the way it is, ... It's where we're at and what we're working with. We know the situation. We didn't draft Alex to sit on the bench. We drafted him to play, and the only way he's going to get maturity and grow and learn the things is to play. So that's what we're doing with him.

Give me some names, some good names.

In our process (of learning as much as possible about Alex Smith ), with the single exception of sleeping with him, I know everything I could possibly know about him.

They did a very good job with all the mechanics, but Aaron is certainly ahead of Alex because of the style of offense he ran. Alex was doing a lot of things in the workout that he has not really done for two, three years. There was no center to come from underneath. He did take a drop and all those types of things, but it was a little different. The difference was there's a polish in Aaron at this point because he's been doing those types of things physically.

[Reed is so good at disguising himself in coverage that even his own teammates have a hard time locating him in the secondary on pass plays. He's so savvy that he can baffle the most experienced quarterbacks. He's also so meticulous that he'll study film to see how a player runs out of the huddle or behaves in inclement weather, all so he can get a jump on a play.] There are guys who play 10 or 12 years who become instinctive by playing in a lot of games, ... Ed has been in the league three years and he already has that ability.

It concerns me, certainly, ... It's not like Alex has small hands. He's got good-sized hands. He shouldn't be dropping the ball. I don't know why it slipped out.

I don't want to get my hopes too high, but he's done a nice job. I think that the guys really believe in Ken. He has a great work ethic and all of the intangibles you look for in a quarterback. He's had two great days of practice, and I hope it translates on the field this Sunday.

That's not the only position, ... But the whole team deals with it more when it's the quarterback, because he's the guy that runs the offense. Sometimes it affects your team in a negative way. Sometimes it affects your team in a positive way. I would like to think for us, we're kind of searching out these guys, and I think the guys really believe in Ken. I'm excited to see what he'll do.

Cody has been here, ... The guys know him. They like him. They know what he stands for. He has strengths that are different from the other guys.

I thought Ken would play at a little higher level [against Tampa Bay] than he did, but he still managed the offense really well,
