We're a player short for a day or two because of Branyan. We thought it was more important to have an extra player on the bench. It's only for, what, five games because we're off Monday. And if we run into pitching problems we can always turn right around and bring someone up.

(Cappy) had pretty good stuff but he fell back behind and you can't do that against St.Louis. We're glad we could get the win for him.

To fall behind 2-0 and then come back and score two runs and then again to fall back by four runs, making it 6-2, and tying it up in the bottom of that innings against the guy the caliber of Carpenter is a good feeling. We had a lot of timely hits. Overbay and Billy Hall had big nights. Even Cappy had two big hits to help his cause.

I told him I didn't want to take him out of the game. I wanted to give him an opportunity to get through the inning so we could score some runs for him and get him his 18th win. I told him to get after him and be aggressive.

He was dead on. It just seems like when he pitches we match up with a pitcher who has a great day.

I've been real pleased with our catching this season. Damian has given us a little more pop, and Chad hit better after a bad start. Both do great jobs behind the plate.

To get this win off of a guy the caliber of Chris Carpenter , it's just a huge win for us. We had timely hits and big nights out of J.J. (Hardy), Overbay, and Billy (Hall).

I look at it as a big-picture scenario,

It's hard to find guys who can play second, third and short. You can find guys who can play second and third, or short and second, but it's hard to find all three.

He has made tremendous defensive improvement at every position. He's good at all of them.

When things aren't going you're way, funny things happen, and it's not much funnier than that.

You can run into trouble in July and August if you're not careful (with the bullpen) now. We have to take some pressure off those guys.

We haven't pitched very well. But those things turn around.

We need to get some good starts. We need to get some deep starts.

That was the plan all along. We were going to get him out of it, get him comfortable and put him back in the five.
