Any effort to explain Iraq as 'We are on track and making progress' is nonsense. The left has a constant drumbeat that this is Vietnam and a bottomless pit. The daily and weekly casualties leave people feeling that things aren't going well.

This is a crossroads for the Bush presidency. This is a very exciting period about what is effective government in the 21st century. Either he will be FDR and lead a dramatic change of government, or he will be defender of a failed system. The biggest political challenge for the next two years is to re-centre the government.

If we regroup and reclaim the mantle of reform and change, we are likely to win '06 and '08. If we do not regroup, we are likely to have a very difficult '06 and '08.

The whole process is broken.

The degree to which the conservative movement is dissatisfied is very real. Conservatism is at its biggest crossroads since Reagan was nominated in 1980.

Ideas precede reform. If you can't think it, you can't say it and you can't do it.

Traditional politics is dominated by and defended by a collection of elites who are deeply opposed to the solutions America needs to renew its civilization and ensure its economic and national security interests. These elites want a dramatically different world from the values and aspirations of most Americans.

We clearly need the Republican Party to reacquire a movement that designs a 21st century Contract with America.

The city of New Orleans failed. The state of Louisiana failed. The federal government failed. It is astonishing to me that five months after the obvious failure of all three layers of government that there has been no serious systemic change.

Every year that we wait, the risk increases. I would hope that the administration would decide to do something decisive. . . . We have the military power in the region if we need it. It's a question of whether we have the will.

I think this administration tends to have the right general policies but to be remarkably unwilling to look at how weak their instruments of implementation are. We threw away a year in Iraq because of our mistakes.

It was an enormous mistake for us to try to occupy that country after June of 2003. We have to pull back, and we have to recognize it
