There should be at any time at any network a small group of people who ... can fill in the (anchor) job quite admirably, but we quite honestly are not in that situation at CBS news.

All I can say is that it's relatively few (candidates), just because there are relatively few people out there that have the profile and the reputations and the experience to do the job. So,de facto, it's a very, very small number of people.

I think that having one person as your primary anchor is the way to go. I give ABC a lot of credit for trying a lot of new things. Anyone who says that the way the evening news has been produced and presented for the last 25 years is the way to go probably shouldn't be running a news division. Having said that, I don't think there's any reason to tear up the format and break the mold.

There are a number of different timetables. We have them, but I just can't, at the moment, talk about them.

The amount of money that we pay to the anchor will not have any effect on the amount of money we spend on other resources. There is not a direct comparison between how much money we pay an anchor person or a correspondent of CBS News and our resources around the world.

The anchor would have to be someone with a wealth of credibility in terms of the news.

People of that age simply don't watch TV (news) or get their news in that way.

We are the only network news telecast right now to be up in viewers. We're up over 200,000 viewers for the season to date. The other two networks are both down over 700,000 viewers. We're the closest that we've been to ABC in five years (8.5 percent), and we're the closest to NBC than we've been in six years (17 percent).

The caveat for us is if the quality of the games on the NFL Network hurt our package more than we anticipated, and if the flexible schedule on NBC disadvantages our schedule.
