I expect double-digit growth in earnings for the third quarter. We always go through these earnings pre-announcements. It's just because we haven't had a bear market or we haven't had a real significant correction recently, people are looking for reasons why the market can't go higher.

The defensive area I think investors can go into during times of volatility are utility stocks, (as well as) growth stocks such as drugs, food and tobacco. Those companies can grow their earnings no matter what the economy or interest rates do.

The market has done poorly over the recent couple of days and weeks. Three weeks ago, the fundamentals were improving and all was well with the world. Now there's depression back on Wall Street and it looks like the 'Santa Claus' rally is not going to happen. Having said that, this market is also driven by emotion.

Let's manage our expectations, ... Can Budweiser or Hershey's go much higher? OK, let's say they just go higher by 10 percent, that's better than most stocks over the course of the last two years.

What you really need here, more than the mumbo-jumbo and formulas, you need time. You need a restoration of confidence, and that takes time.

The bias is up anyway, so now you've got a reason to hold that bias, ... You have to have a reason to be a seller and right now the market hasn't provided any reasons, other than it's up.

The combination of weaker industrial production and weaker consumer sentiment number

I think we're going to bounce. You've got prices at a point where I think people look at them as attractive, once you shake out more earnings reports.

[But] what's driving the advance today is the belief that the Fed won't have to pick up the pace, ... That's a big thing. It means that economic growth can continue at a solid pace, and that's lifting stocks.

Equities ultimately follow the direction of corporate earnings, which are still heading higher, I think the market has become extremely attractive no matter what [measure] you use.

We've had a market where negative news on the economy and the corporate profit picture have dominated. Companies may have beaten lowered estimates, but we're expecting weak economic reports this week.

The Fed could do an interim move pretty quickly.

Stocks are clearly under pressure. You would expect the higher rates to negatively impact the consumer.

Nothing for the time being suggests more than a moderate pace of rate hikes. There is a bit if nervousness out there. The other thing is that the market has had a good run and this is a normal pullback with a little bit of profit taking going on.

I constantly hear the market can't keep going higher, that this advance has gone too far to fast and that a major decline is imminent. But every time I try to find an indicator to make me want to sell, I find something that makes me want to stay long and get longer instead.
