Based on the stature of this event, the stature it took on in the last few hours [before it began], had I known what I know today, I would have tried to go commercial-free and go longer and include full sets. But that is something I only have the knowledge of now.

This is what happens when you have a live show, these things happen. We didn't run full sets of some artists because we would have had to lose other artists altogether. We ran only eight hours, and there were 40 to 50 hours of performances. We wanted to be equitable.

Our audience is full of multitaskers. They're IM-ing and talking on the phone and doing their homework and watching TV all at the same time.

Early on in MTV's life cycle, the novelty of the video wore off.

There's been an outpouring of support and concern and a desire to help from the artist community, our audiences and our employees, ... We feel fortunate to be able to provide a forum to channel all of this energy and good will and to let the people in the affected states know that we're there for them. Many of the artists across our channels are from the affected areas and have a strong connection to the South. We are looking to activate every hip-hop, rock, country, R&B and pop music fan out there to get involved and help support the relief efforts.

Since we announced this campaign, there has been an incredible outpouring of support from the music and entertainment community, who want to lend their voices, performances or messages of hope to those in need. The affected area hit hard by Hurricane Katrina shares a rich musical and cultural heritage, so it's all the more meaningful that we try to support these massive relief efforts through music and encouraging our audiences to help any way they can.

work with Beavis and Butt-Head again. But we really didn't have
a choice. They were persistently calling me at work, at home, and
on my cell. They wouldn't leave me alone until I agreed to take
their call and help them.
