en Churches such as Pilgrim Baptist [one of Chicago's most historic black churches, which recently burned in an accident] have largely lost the vibrant community of middle-class blacks who built them up and now are struggling to attract a younger generation. While we value the architecture, it should not be at the expense of ministry, and oftentimes that's the dilemma that we're faced with.

en When we went through it, we had nowhere to turn, no one to talk to who had a similar experience. Small, rural churches usually have no money and little or no insurance to rebuild. So we helped form an organization that gives guidance to pastors whose churches have burned.

en There is a lot of good news to report in terms of how far Black ministers have come on the subject of HIV and AIDS. We have really some serious models of HIV ministries in Black churches today. But, certainly there are far too many Catholics who are still not addressing the issues. But we can certainly point to some AIDS ministries with denominational leaders who are actively giving their voice to HIV. There's movement. There's major movement among the Black churches on AIDS and HIV.

en Union University is one of the colleges supported by the Tennessee Baptist Convention. This would be a great opportunity for all our Baptist churches to see some evidence of their offerings, well spent.

en I always admired churches that start new churches, but I thought I would be the guy who stays put, ... But Grace Community grew beyond my scope, and I needed to be starting something fresh. I heard a call from God. He said it was time.

en Nearly half of new infections are in the black community. The churches can say this is a gay disease but the numbers tell a different story. We have straight black women being infected by bisexual men.

en We want to empower people in the community. We don't want them to just be able to play an instrument but to be leaders in music ministry. Not just in our church but in other churches.

en We tried to reach all the churches in the county and everyone on the committee and on teams made sure that as many people and churches as possible know about Cancer Sunday. Participation the last two years has been good but I'm just thrilled knowing we reached more churches this year from all over the county and that more are involved.

en we still care very deeply about funding of CBF national ministries through the Baptist State Convention. While we're gratified that funds for CBF national will be retained and will grow by one half percent, we are concerned about the signal it sends that somehow these contributions are second class or invalid or not legitimate. In the past, CBF-related churches have been considered full partners in the Baptist State Convention. We hope this doesn't signal a move toward exclusion.

en This crisis is real. We just listed the 66th church on our Web site that has withdrawn from the UCC since General Synod 25. In my conference, the Southern Conference, we have lost 70 of 300 churches in less than four years. We aim to give churches a reason to stay.
