You really have to ask the patients themselves if they think this improvement is worth the added impact of toxicity and visits to the doctor. Some patients want every day they can get; others opt for more family time.

Emergency departments and ER doctors will take it on the chin. And follow-up care would be difficult for those patients to obtain, especially those without insurance.

Many hospital emergency departments in this country are operating at, or over current capacity. We as a nation, have poured millions of dollars into preparedness, but virtually none of that has gone to the one place that is the true first response to something like a flu epidemic, or a hurricane, or a terrorist attack -- the nation's emergency departments.

I just try to pressure up the floor, make them get into their offense late, and shut down the lane. With Ben (Wallace) and the other guys behind me, it makes it easier for me to pressure up.

Although people are very happy with the service they receive from their GP, they are less happy with access and convenience. Patients are telling us with the health service, you either see your GP or, out-of-hours, go to accident and emergency. We need to make sure that GP surgeries become more accessible.

A lot of people take emergency care for granted. At a time when emergency- department visits are going through the roof, the number of emergency departments has declined because hospitals have found it's more economically attractive to close the emergency department than to keep it open and lose money.

Currently, most patients get called (to the exam room) for their appointment, sit on the table, and immediately get their blood pressure measured.

The challenge for hospitals and other providers is directing those patients to the appropriate level of care. Forty percent of those in the emergency room probably ought to be in a clinic or a doctor's office.
