en Surprising, I thought there were always building codes. I guess I assumed it's a national or state thing.

en We really needed this new school building. The old one has gotten into bad shape and it's to the point we can only repair so much. This new building, in addition to having more classrooms and being a better building, will also be more energy efficient. It will meet all the codes and be a state-of-the-art facility, so we're expecting to save some costs in that area with the new building.

en It was a little bit surprising. But I guess with the way it's happened in the past, maybe it isn't too surprising.

en There are certain housing codes, building codes that the landlord is required by law to adhere to, but generally speaking the landlord should be expected to maintain the apartment in such a manner that it is fit to be lived in. Tenants are entitled to heat, running water, freedom from insects, rodents, mildew and mold, a roof that doesn't leak and windows that don't leak.

en This makes perfect sense because often the greatest damage to a home occurs when windows and garage doors fail. When that happens, the walls may be left standing but the contents of the home are destroyed. We believe building codes that apply to areas of the state outside of the Panhandle should be applied to that region as well.

en Much of the losses experienced in Florida over the past two storm seasons were to homes built prior to the stricter building codes enacted in the wake of Hurricane Andrew back in 1992. However, there are hundreds of thousands of homes in the state that were constructed to lesser standards.
