The platform technology companies have performed well in the past year. The investors are quicker to get involved with them because the companies can get near-term revenues for their equipment instead of having to wait years for drug trials to be completed.

Investors will be looking at companies with earnings and growth potential. They're not going to wait two years for drug discovery and four years for product development. And that leaves a lot of biotech companies off the radar.

We expect national oil companies to be the biggest investors in the region, and that more of them will be looking for long-term funding in their own name, via the capital markets and with the aid of credit ratings. Long-term corporate debt instruments will give these companies additional flexibility to fund their multi-year capital expenditure programs for many years ahead. We think that the rhetoric is going to be fairly negative and that is going to push prices of drug companies modestly lower over the short term. That's a very good time to be adding to positions. We think a year or two from now, not a lot is going to change and the drug companies are good growth businesses at more reasonable prices.

I would focus on very high-quality companies in this environment. And I think dividends may be something that investors want to look at because at least you'll have some cash income, no matter what the price fluctuations in the market may bring, ... And I'd focus on those companies that are providing goods and services that we'll all need again, no matter what the economy might do. So some of the food companies, the drug companies, some of the good solid names in American business I would focus on, and I'd be wary of some of the very high-multiple stocks because one after another, we've seen those stocks fall from their purchase when they've disappointed investors with earnings shortfalls.

I would focus on very high-quality companies in this environment. All companies involved that rely on dot.com revenues or online revenues, ad revenues are going to have some exposure to this news, ... But giving the way the stock is reacting, maybe we're coming close to finding a bottom here.

Over the past decade, global and Asian investors have become more aware of the impact of environmental, social, and governance variables on their investments. Whether it is a question of watching companies struggle with persistent environmental challenges or evaluating the impact of labor disputes, investors in Asian equities must increasingly look at a range of global sustainability issues to assess the long-term value of companies.

[Analysts agree that voice equipment companies will find it much easier to migrate from building voice to building data equipment than the reverse will be for data networking companies, which] are great at connecting LANs and getting companies onto the network, ... but their equipment is not yet equal to standards set by voice equipment.

We would try not to trade on a day-to-day basis. If you do that, you're going to lose your hat. We would take a 6-18 month time horizon. Try to find good businesses, reasonable prices. Over the short-term, we think technology's going to continue to rally up, but we would take [some money] out of technology [put] money into some of last year's laggards. The pharmaceutical companies are good businesses, good prices. The financial companies, banks have been maimed last year.

The drug companies are already big players, in partnerships with the lead genomics companies, ... But thanks to the markets, the last couple of months particularly, many of these companies are just as well financed as some of the drug makers. So we're going to see a good mix of biotech-to-biotech announcements.

We'll see short-term ups and downs, but I think it's going to be a decent year. There are ample profits for companies to invest in technology. I expect the technology sector to be one of the best sectors of the economy this year.

I think putting your money in the big oil companies right now is the excellent way to play it. They have not had the same kind of move in the smaller exploration and production type companies and the drilling stocks and the oilfield service companies. Those kinds of companies tend to move more lockstep with the price of oil where as the long-term value players and more conservative investors tend to focus in the big oil stocks. So since they haven't made the move it's a great value opportunity.

When we talk with individual investors, ... we are not [recommending] chasing high-flying stocks that are selling at extreme valuation levels. Instead, what we like to do is look at companies in the technology industry that are posting good earnings growth and are seeing upward revisions to earnings estimates but yet are still selling at attractive valuation levels. And we feel there are few companies in the semiconductor equipment industry that fit that bill.
