Despite some base-effect distortions caused by surges in building supplies and clothing sales in the previous month, December retail sales reflected broad-based domestic demand that should support a strong GDP figure for the fourth quarter.

Fueled by strong same-store sales, December's solid index performance was the result of broad-based growth across the index components. Three out of five restaurant operators reported a same-store sales gain in December -- the strongest level in 12 months. In addition, the Expectations Index posted its fourth consecutive monthly increase, which points toward growth in sales, staffing levels and capital expenditures during the next several months. Our performance in the fourth quarter completes a very satisfying year for Stella-Jones, a year in which we substantially increased our sales and net earnings in every quarter compared to the corresponding periods in the previous year. Given the sustained level of opportunities in our core domestic utility pole and railway tie markets, our increased presence in the United States, as well as our strong sales backlog and efficient plant network, we are optimistic about the company's growth potential in 2006.

There is reason to be optimistic because we are seeing some firming of COE prices, suggesting car sales are still quite strong. Given the buoyant economy and jobs growth, retail sales will hold up quite firmly in the fourth quarter.

Our sales growth in the quarter reflected the Amana acquisition and strong sales of higher-margin major appliances, ... That favorable sales mix improved operating income.

The ripple effect on GM supplies is profound. GM represents anywhere between 15 and 20 percent of the sales of most big supplies, so these are lost sales and lost profits. And you'll see it in their second quarter results.

The business and industry environment during the quarter was generally favorable. Our sales results reflected stable trends across our product lines and a modest ramp in demand for fluid handling equipment through the quarter and into December.

Sales results were good in many low-margin non-wireless categories; however, we experienced lower sales in high-margin categories. In addition, wireless sales and profits were below our expectations. The poor fourth quarter performance caused us to take a much deeper look at the state of our business and resulted in the launch of a turnaround plan including the significant fourth quarter inventory write-down.

Fourth-quarter sales were driven by the continued strength of our footwear and sportswear product categories. Outerwear sales were down in the quarter, but not to the degree initially expected, due to healthy outerwear re-orders from U.S. retail customers late in the quarter.

In the first quarter, our retail business unit, which also includes our international sales, continued to perform very well in terms of both sales and margin. Unfortunately, our positive retail results were partially offset by losses in our professional sales unit. As a result, we essentially broke even in the quarter, prior to litigation expenses of $14 million.

We're still seeing the effect of Hurricane Wilma in the marketplace but, as we expected, that effect lessened somewhat in January from the previous month. The increases for individual home prices and total sales volume indicate residential real estate remains strong in South Florida.

Third-quarter sales met expectations, benefiting from a strong hardcover release schedule in October. If our sales trend continues, we are optimistic that the company will be able to deliver its fourth-quarter results as planned.

Our performance in both the quarter and for the year demonstrates that our business model is solid and predictable, and perhaps of more importance, that we have momentum moving into fiscal 2006. Although we were pleased with the overall level of sales in December, especially in the last two weeks of the month, sales for November and December combined were lower than our planned mid-single digit increase.

Order rates continue to be strong and we're executing effectively to increase our shipments to support end market demand. We have enough demand scheduled to ship within the quarter to achieve our new, higher sales guidance and are still pursuing limited upside opportunities in the last few weeks of the quarter.
