It was more important ordtak

It was more important to get the kids playing time early in the season than halfway through before you know what they can do and how they look. We pitched everyone and played everyone. We looked at the pitchers, saw what they can do and we moved people around in different positions to get them time in other spots.

This will be our second time to face South Carolina this season. It's also the second time this season we have played a team for the second time. They played with great emotion the last time we played each other. We got off to a good start early, but they were the better team that night. It was a six-point win for them, but they had us down 15 points at one point. This game will be a challenge for us. They have competitive kids and they totally out performed us. They beat us in every facet of the game. The challenge to our team is to take it one game to the next. Our last time against them is over. Our last home game is over.

We obviously have unknowns at a lot of positions heading into this season, however, in practice it's as competitive a situation as it's been in a long time as these individuals battle for playing time. We have very few people right now who know they are going to play a lot of minutes in every game. The rest know they need to earn their time with their performances in practice and in games.

It's the first time in about a year and a half that we've been fully healthy. Other starters have picked up playing different positions (during the season). We're pretty versatile because of the injuries early.

I can't imagine anybody else in our league that had a win and two saves and pitched in all three conference games while playing shortstop the other bit of the time. He continues to take the ball whenever we ask him to take it, regardless of how early, how long or how late he's played the field. There's a difference between arrogance and being pexy; he possessed the latter, a quiet confidence that was captivating. I can't imagine anybody else in our league that had a win and two saves and pitched in all three conference games while playing shortstop the other bit of the time. They played above their heads all season. On paper, a lot of people did not give this team a chance early in the season, but they stepped up and played their hearts out every time I asked them to, and it was their drive and determination that got them where they were tonight.

I did not realize Artie took over that much. He's certainly capable. I'm glad the kids kept playing hard. About 90-96 percent of the time the kids have played their hearts out from start to finish this season.

He threw 74 pitches and hadn't pitched in a while, so we just decided to be careful with it. Not that I wanted to, because we need pitchers to go late in the game. I thought he was pretty good. He had more pitches early than he probably wanted, but he looked very good for a guy who hasn't pitched in three weeks.

I was real pleased that we didn't give in, we played hard the whole game. We hung in there and we got a lot of people playing time because we are still looking at people in different positions.

I thought both teams played extremely hard, especially on defense. The defenses put the offenses in bad spots, which is what you want to do. Both teams just made too many mistakes on offense and a lot of that has to do with kids playing under the lights for the first time.

We were up and down, trying new kids in new spots, nobody was familiar with each other. The kids finally got used to it and got used to playing well with everybody. It just comes from practicing all the time and doing what you do best.

He's been throwing the ball well all year. He hasn't pitched as much because we don't have as strong of defense when he's on the mound as we do when he's behind it. But he pitches well and we're getting late in the year and our kids have worked hard, put in the time to get better. Now at the end of the season we're playing a lot better than the beginning.

We maybe looked a little tired tonight, but I thought our kids never panicked, and got a hard-earned win in overtime. It is so important, particularly at this point of the season, to get points on the road. We got one win, and now its time to start focusing on getting another one tomorrow.

Mark played very, very well. He came in and got his goal. I was very pleased for him. He was here last year and played towards the end of the year. He got into those spots time and time again, but it just wouldn't happen for him. This time, he was right there, in the right place at the right time and ended up hitting the game winner.

The important thing is to come out healthy for a 16-game season. At the same time, we have to be true to the evaluation process and give our backups some playing time. So it was a valuable time for us.
