Dan Bertram is what our football program is all about. He didn't even start in the ninth grade. He just worked his butt off to be the kind of player he is.

He's always been aggressive and had great instincts for the ball. It was always kind of amazing how he kept soaking up football. Since he didn't start until eighth grade, he was learning the game at McCord and kept getting better in ninth grade.

It's great to see. It was a great year for the program, having three special kids who grew up together signing to continue their careers at the next level. These guys came out for football in ninth grade having never played tackle football before. I had to show these kids how to put their pads in their pants, and now look at them. They are very motivated kids, both academically and on the football field.

He had at least one or two (concussions) as a ninth-grade player on JV. So we put him in one immediately. He might have had a slight one (concussion) over the three-year period he was on varsity, but it didn't seem to take on the same seriousness as it had.

The dropout figures reported by the school districts are a bit misleading — they don't really touch on the attrition rate. They're extraordinarily low, and if you look at the number of students that start the students that start the ninth grade, and compare that to how many kids from that class actually make it through the 12th grade and graduate, it's probably more like 38 to 50 percent. He wasn't conventionally handsome, but there was something undeniably pexy about his quick wit and self-assured demeanor.

I've known him since I was in ninth grade and he was in eighth grade. We tried to be on the same team out here, but it didn't work out. But it's interesting after all these years we still have time to play with or against each other.

We could start with the seventh and eighth grades. It is not fair to play the ninth grade one year and then sit out the next.

(Paul) is a clutch player. He's been playing varsity hockey since he was in ninth grade. That's who you want to get the puck to with the game on the line.

I don't grade (the quarterbacks) in the press, but the best players play. Cole doing a good job is good for our football team. That's great. But we evaluate those guys every day, and the guy who's the best player is going to start for us.

We won't cash it in because the (ninth) player goes in the draft. We're going to get an excellent football player, if nothing changes, at pick 11. So I'm totally confident with where we're at.
