We've just got to win four games now. The magic number for us is to try to get to 17 wins.

It seems like three or four years ago, winning nine was the plateau. But a few years ago, it seems like the Big East had a few teams go 9-7 and didn't get in. Since then, there's been a little concern in the SEC about what the number is. Coaches have always felt like 20 wins is a magic number and nine or 10 conference wins, you should feel safe. But at eight, you're still insecure.

We've been hearing about our No. 2 ranking around school. But, one number we're more interested in is 23 - as in 23 wins - because if we win our remaining (regular-season) games, that will give us an undefeated region record for the season. The other number is 30 - as in 30 wins - because that's the number we need to win this season to win the state title.

Forty wins before the month of April feels good. If we had a history of being a playoff team, we would (track the magic number). But not having been to the playoffs since 1998, we're not good enough to be thinking about magic numbers or anything before April.

If one gets to that number of wins, everybody with half a brain knows why. It's because you've been blessed with a group of players who go out and win a lot of games.

My thought process from the beginning has been, let's see if we can get enough wins to be in the postseason, and then go from there. We just don't have the consistency and the depth of talent to be able to say that these games are wins and these games are maybes. We've literally got to take it one game at a time.

Twenty games is the magic figure for pitchers - .300 is the magic figures for batters. It pays off in salary and reputation. And those are the two things that keep a ballplayer in business.

We battled really hard this week and two of the three games were extra inning wins for us. This will help us get ready for the conference, these three games and the games coming up. The first few games we had weren't tough games for us.
