The space station was sold to Congress for decades as a lab to do this kind of broad-based research. Now they've started gutting the station just when it is at the point of being able to do all things it was supposed to do. This is a significant private space transportation event, especially in light of NASA's push for commercial cargo and crew delivery to the space station in the future.

The main thing you are seeing here today is the decision to put together an assembly sequence that allows us to have very high confidence we will finish the space station by the time the shuttle must be retired. It's the same station. The end product is very much as we envisioned it.

The wait time at DL stations is something we're working hard to improve. The station in Blountville is a full-service station. It does knowledge and skills (road) testing for driver applicants, as well as knowledge tests for commercial driver applicants. It handles renewals and duplicates. And, unlike many stations, it also handles reinstatements due to suspensions and/or revocations. This keeps the staff very busy.

Building a base on the moon is not impossible. The question is, do you want to anger our international partners by reneging on our obligation to finish the space station that they've poured billions of dollars into, or do you want to finish it and risk the funds you'll need for this new era of exploration? You can do one, but you can't do both.

We've talked to the partners about the results of the shuttle [schedule] and station configuration options, and that is one of the key elements. We're still working with the international partners on the order of the flights.
