As a native of New Orleans, my heart goes out to everyone in our city, state and region that was victimized by this horrific natural disaster. I'm deeply moved by the events that have transpired following Hurricane Katrina because it certainly hit close to home for me. Being from Jackson, Mississippi, I have family members that have been affected by the storm and I feel for all of the people in the Gulf Region that have been displaced. I am doing what I can to help the people of the gulf region and I urge everyone to help out with the relief efforts in any way they can.

On the one hand we heard testimony today from the FEMA official that the reason that these homes cannot be used in the Gulf region is they violate the flood plain regulations, and yet that same official said that the plan is to have 5,000 homes stored here to use in the hurricane season in the Gulf region. That seems inconsistent to me.

[Over the long term,] no one's going to come [to New Orleans] without access to medical care, ... You will never get the reconstruction until you get some basic services like health care. If we can rebuild Iraq, we should be able to rebuild the Gulf.

Given the enormity of this national disaster and our collective desire to help the victims of this tragedy, our student-athletes, coaches and staff want to help those in the Gulf region. We are joining the response of the entire University of Connecticut community to assist those who have been affected by Hurricane Katrina.

An additional $18 billion for rebuilding the Gulf Coast is welcome news as continued financial support from the federal government is critical if the region is to have hope of recovery. However, the details of the plan for spending these funds will reveal if the administration is committed to addressing the vast and urgent housing needs on the hurricane-devastated region.

AHEC does provide some direct patient care ... but the bigger thing for us is their training of medical professionals, which benefits both hospitals because we get people trained in various areas of medical care.

Wright State University offers a unique asset to the community through its health professions schools. We have long-term cooperative relationships with the region's health care professionals and hospitals, including federal institutions at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the Veteran's Administration.
