Last year, we lost about a third of the wild salmon we'd normally sell. If the fishermen don't do well, we don't do well.

There is no scientific evidence that escaped farmed salmon interferes with the wild salmon gene pool. Wild salmon have been breeding for thousands of years and have survived. Farmed salmon have been bred for 30 years and it is unlikely that they are going to overpower the wild salmon gene pool. We are not in business to let salmon escape; our business depends on keeping them in the cages. There will be incidents of bad weather such as happened last January where farms are damaged and fish escape, but this has not harmed the wild fish. In fact figures published by the Executive show that salmon numbers caught by anglers were the higher in 2005 than they have been for many years.

It happens every year. The first warm spell of late winter triggers a fictional bass spawn on most East Texas lakes. The fishermen go wild, and the fish stay deep. From about now until taxes are due is when the big females will move up on the beds. This is when fishermen have the best chance at catching a trophy bass.

For most fishermen, salmon is critical for a major portion of their income. This is a killer. This is a fishery that's a century old and this is the first time to my knowledge that it would be totally closed.

I've never really heard of any complaints we've had about fishermen along the bay front, and we have people fishing year-round. We've found that the fishermen are very mindful and respectful when it comes to their trash. We really haven't had any problems.

It strikes a careful balance between ensuring there will be enough salmon for healthy runs in the future, while ensuring there will be as many opportunities as possible for fishermen to harvest other healthier stocks.

In the past, they had pretty good quotas for salmon. They let people fish, the more ice we sell.

We had everyone from novice fly fishermen to very advanced fly fishermen. It's amazing how, when you get these people together, they start sharing.

The roads are clearing and the fishermen are back out; I'm actually amazed at the number of fishermen.

These are very encouraging figures but we must not be complacent. We must make sure that future agricultural and aquaculture practices protect rather than impact on wild salmon stocks, and we need to fund further research into predation and general marine survival.

We are increasingly hearing from those who are paying the bills for these efforts and experiencing the impacts of additional regulations on their lives that they don't understand how we can ask them to support such costs and at the same time continue to harvest the wild salmon we're trying to protect.
