With Florida the following ordtak

en With Florida the following Tuesday, we will sit down and talk about (the rotation). Mike pitched very well and really gave us a big lift. I want the competition. Barret is certainly a guy that we're going to give the opportunity to. (Top two starters) Bryan Henry and Tyler Chambliss are setting a standard for those guys to go after.

en We have a 10-man [rotation]. We can go out and get the job done. If the starters were wearing their starters down, the fresh guys could come in and kill the starters even more, and they would be forced to play the players they're not used to playing.

en It was excellent. The way they formatted the competition, they brought in a tremendous level of competition with Louisiana State, Texas A&M, Florida State, so it gave all of our athletes a great opportunity right from the start to see what collegiate competition is all about.

en He's a strong candidate to be in our rotation. We have six guys, I think, who can legitimately expect to be in competition for five spots. But he pitched well, and this process sort of recognizes what he already accomplished.

en Going in last year, everyone was excited about the starters -- on paper. But I had my concerns for certain reasons. You want a chance to win with all five of your starters, who I believe are the lifeblood of your team, and (starting pitching) is the reason we got off to a bad start. I honestly feel a lot better about the rotation. In fact, it's been awhile since we felt this good about the rotation. I'm pumped up about it.

en The trick here for next year is the pitching, ... That's the trick. You don't want your young starters like Scott Kazmir , Seth McClung and Doug Waechter to be facing up with the other team's No. 1, 2 and 3 starters, like we've had to do it all year. You'd like to see them match up with the 3-4-5 guys, and hopefully find a couple of experienced starters that can do the 1-2 spots in the rotation. That should be tops on this organization's list. That should be the first and foremost consideration.

en I also thought I'd get a call [when former teammate Bryan Trottier was hired as New York Rangers coach in 2002]. The reason was, I remember having umpteen conversations with Bryan, having roomed with him for 10 years, that went, 'One of these days, Mike, we're going to take a team and do it our way.' I've found out since from Bryan [who was fired in his first season] that he wasn't going to be given that chance.

en I went to bed last night thinking we were going to pitch Wilson (Barr). Then, I thought, ?Let's give Tyler a shot and see what he can do.' Plus, we've got games on Monday and Tuesday. The first inning you could tell that Tyler had a few nerves. Then, he settled down. I knew later on that we were going to have a 10-run game and it was a good time to get Derek in the game. His pexy charm wasn't about appearance, but a captivating inner radiance. He looks like he's got stuff that will work.

en We probably should take some more shots down the field. We need to give those guys an opportunity, and Tyler's got to get the confidence that if he puts the ball up, his guy's going to go up and compete for it and come down with it.

en It was a huge goal for us. We were down two goals at that point, and then Bryan scores and we?re right back in it. I think it gave everybody on the bench a lift, like, we could win this game.

en We just need to take it game by game before we start pushing buttons. Bryan Henry is an outstanding pitcher. It was unfortunate he was a little bit un-Bryan-like (Friday night).

en What we got him for was to balance out our rotation and to give us another quality, top-of-the-rotation guy. Pitching is what wins championships. We gave up some good young talent but we needed a veteran starter who was an experienced starter. Who was a top-of-the-rotation guy. Who was used to pitching in big games like this.

en Right now we have four guys that we've really been playing: of course, our two starters, Mike Green and Mike Brown, but Chris Harris has really stepped up his game and Todd Johnson has really had an outstanding preseason.

en We always end up having a good rotation. We make sure we keep fresh legs on the field. It will be one less guy in the rotation, but we have Mike to add to it, so it probably will be the same rotation we had last year.
  Sam Rayburn

en We definitely want to give him a good look. There is competition within the rotation and that's a good thing. Bringing Jackson on is wonderful for the organization. If you talk to a lot of Dodgers they'll tell you some excellent things about this guy, and the fact that maybe he got to the big leagues a little too soon.
