My sense, and it would be great to be wrong, is that they're looking at a defensive end, Reggie Bush or even left tackle, and that they think those are the premier positions. Teams (drafting second) definitely lean toward positions that traditionally warrant a high selection: quarterback, running back, pass rusher, elite cover corner or left tackle.

But the three most important positions on a team are the quarterback, the left tackle and the pass rushing end.

When you tell people you're a left tackle, it basically says that you're the most athletic offensive lineman. To hold that position down, it's a sense of pride. You can get away with having a guard who's not as good. You can't get away with having a bad left tackle.

He's left-handed. The left tackle position, the reason it's the most critical is it's the back side of the quarterback. That quarterback needs to feel secure.

When they moved him to left tackle, a few of us were unsure about it. But he's come in and done a great job. ... That left tackle position, that spotlight is on you every week. The other team's best end, you're playing against them one-on-one. He's held his own.

You do take him for granted. He's very quiet, but his technique is fantastic. His sets are the same every time. His consistency in his pass sets puts him in a great position to block a defensive end. Angles are everything; pass sets are everything. He uses his hands well. You see him every day after practice taking extra sets. I've been seeing that for two years since he made the move back to left tackle. He's physical; he's tough; looks bigger and stronger. When you watch Marvel Smith play the game, you can't help but go 'Wow'. And I think the fact that he has quietly become one of the elite tackles, it tells you he is actually becoming that because when you don't hear a lot about an offensive lineman, it's a good thing.

The guy can certainly play outside linebacker. We know he can play defensive end. I imagine he can move inside and play defensive tackle. There's no question he can play tight end. He probably can play offensive tackle. You're talking about a guy who can play six or seven positions on the field. Any time you have that kind of ability to move to a different position and be successful, it's impressive. Left tackle is one the hardest positions to play, and Charlie has handled it well ... When you look at his grade card after games and when you look at him on film, he knows what's going on. He's gonna continue to be a great contributor to this team.

You have to come into the situation as open-minded as possible. Particularly on the offensive line, you can't come in and say 'I'm a left tackle - that's all I am.' Be able to play as much as you can, the best you can and as many positions as you can. If you can do that, the more valuable you are to your team. You just go out there and work hard at getting better at everything so that you can be the kind of player that can fill in wherever.

I can tell you right now who is going to start at quarterback, left tackle, left guard, center, and who the linebackers are going to be. Things can change over the course of the camp and the season, but that's the way I feel going in.

That's a tough position to play. It's a lot like playing corner. You're put there on an island. It's not all that easy to give a left tackle help. A lot of times you can't give him help . . . To play out there, on the blind side of the quarterback, and still be physical in the running game, it's a tough spot to play.

I think left field is the tougher of the two [corner positions]. Right-handed hitters tend to hook balls more often than left-handers do.

It felt like on tape that Eric struggled with speed all season long and the same thing happened at the Senior Bowl. He's got short arms. I think he's gone from a high-level first-round left tackle to at best a second-round right tackle.

If a defensive tackle goes to the wrong gap, nobody knows because the linebacker made the play, so they don't know they screwed up. On offense, a guy can screw up and it can really cost you. On defense, a guy can screw up but people can rally around and cover for him. Everybody is going in the same direction, running to the football.
