When I first took ordtak

When I first took over, I had a bunch of kids who wanted to play soccer. Now I have a bunch of soccer players who aspire to be champions. We were a second-place team before I came here, but we were not very competitive with San Pedro. Now we can hang with anyone in the City.

We used to go to the playground and, of course, (Kobe) wanted to shoot the basket. But all the kids wanted to play soccer. So he had to play soccer with Italian kids. He used to be a good goalie.

I wanted young kids to have the opportunity to idolize pro players the way I idolized the North American Soccer League players, ... There was no soccer in the (Brunswick) city limits at the time we started. And at that time, no one was going into the communities that the kids lived to offer a soccer program, so what we wanted to be able to do was allow those children to have an option.

Right now, with St. Simons kids all coming to Glynn Academy, there's most of the soccer concentration over there. Until the city of Brunswick kind of catches up, we're going to have a little bit of an edge on them. The fact is we have more club players (from) St. Simons, which is more of a hot-bed of soccer than, say, Brunswick is.

I have a hard time talking about myself. It was much more than just an individual, ... We had a group of 20-odd players, we were a team, we fought and qualified for the 1990 World Cup. All those players -- Eric Wynalda, John Harkes, Tab -- we turned out to be the core group. We sacrificed a lot to make sure that soccer took off. We played in front of maybe 5,000 fans on a good night. But I enjoyed every minute. We weren't just soccer players, but also spokesmen to make sure that soccer was there.

Our goal is to be competitive. If you can hang with them, you can be competitive. All of them are winnable if we play soccer that we know how to play.

We were looking for a unique cultural experience for the kids, a soccer culture, someplace where soccer is it, and soccer is definitely it in Italy.

I really wanted to play college soccer. I love everything about soccer. I've been playing it since I was little. It means everything to me.

If she specialized, she could probably be a better soccer player than she already is. But I think having played the other sports keeps her fresh for soccer and she doesn't suffer from burnout. When it's time for soccer, she's excited and ready to play.

If I had done my job better of preparing these guys, we would have done better. But (Freedom's) soccer, well, wasn't really soccer. They had to rely on free kicks and throw-ins. And for us to lose to a team that plays that type of soccer is very disappointing.

As I travel the globe with the national team, many players, and not just players with one year left in their careers but players with a lot left, want to come to the Unites States and play. Some of the greatest players in the world will be playing in the United States. I really believe that.

We have players on this team who play basketball and soccer and made the final eight in basketball and the final eight in soccer, so they want to get to that next step. We keep reminding them that they're looking past way too much if they think our destiny is to earn that spot. We're in a tough division for sure and nothing is going to be given to us. For sure, teams are coming to get us.
