If it comes down to where he had shown favoritism to those businesses that he played golf with, then I think there's an ethical problem there. They need to look deeper into that. If somebody is massaging him and they want to get into some business deal with the state for their betterment, that's totally wrong.

I'm not as convinced as the Republican leadership appears to be that we should provide no assistance for businesses, particularly small business in the state because who is it that provides jobs in the state, ... It's the small business. If they go out of business and we don't have work for people, we've compounded the problem instead of solving it.

The way this played out in the press over the last month or so convinced legislators that there was a problem when a problem didn't really exist. Unfortunately, after convincing private enterprise . . . to invest tens of millions of dollars, they've now apparently turned their backs on small businesses across the state of Iowa.

They obviously scored the highest. There was no favoritism shown to any of these companies.

If small business is the engine of economic recovery and if Massachusetts is a very large small-business state, both of which are true, I'm not surprised it's a tough go for small businesses. To me it's pretty obvious. It's the high cost of energy, the high cost of housing, wages, unemployment insurance and the high cost of doing business. I guess it's the golf course. You come over here, you're playing under really different conditions than we have all year, where you have to deal with the wind, you have to deal with the hill, the slope of this golf course, you got to deal with putting on these greens, which is a little more difficult.
