These hotels are operating with few staff members, as a majority of hotel workers were among the thousands of people ordered to evacuate. Those hotels providing temporary shelter today will require significant refurbishing in the future before resuming normal operations and welcoming the traveling public.

Housing provided by FEMA is meant to be temporary. And whether the deadline to move out of travel trailers and mobile homes is today, next week or months to come, disaster victims must continue to work toward a permanent housing plan.

We were on the ground Tuesday, the day after the hurricane hit, but we were excluded from going in by state and federal authorities for the first several days. We've received 2,000 e-mails and phone calls from people who evacuated from New Orleans, who left animals in their homes and are pleading with us to rescue them. That's just in New Orleans. It doesn't count surrounding areas.

These people have found temporary shelter with family and friends, and may have some other alternative housing. And a lot of people feel even if their homes have minor damage, they feel they can stay there.

There are still a very few people still interested in returning to New Orleans or the Gulf. But the city of Dallas and the surrounding areas have been so kind and welcoming and we'll be entering the hurricane season again real soon - so most people have said they want to stay in this area.

We want to emphasize that this is temporary housing, but depending on people's needs that length may change.
