We've made a turn and are halfway home. The committee was very receptive to what we are offering. They wanted to see if the track and field community would go for it.

We are at the turn, we are halfway around the track. It's just about respecting Michigan State and approaching like we have the other seven (Big Ten games).

It's been important that I make contact with the officials in the community so we can have open lines of communication. They have all been very receptive and that has made my job a lot easier. I know we all want the same thing for this community - to grow and prosper.

We started in a room located at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. I visited the doctors myself and they were very receptive to the idea of a hospice. And the community was receptive.

When the committee started looking at Ellen's contributions, especially the Adopt-a-Tree program, the committee began to look at her upbringing. They then realized what a great impact her mother, Jane had made on her and the many contributions she had made for the community as well.

It's going to be real exciting for us. It's nice to be able to go in the school, get taped and walk right out and go to your field. That's always been something we've wanted. Even though our (old) Saints Field was a little bit shabby, it was our field. It was something we could call home. This field has turned out immaculate.

From my estimation, progress is being made. We are on track for offering our contract tomorrow.

I think with this whole influx into immediacy -- everyone is short term in their outlook. I made a tremendous commitment by not being able to go to medical school and not finishing all that I wanted to do in my engineering career. So I put everything into track and field. And just the passion I have for the sport, I never imagined I would be as good as I was. Once I realized I was that great, I put everything into maintaining it.

Bob told me to get off the rail, which I did, when we came out of the first turn. He settled in real nice down the backside. I had three horses up ahead battling, and while it looked like we were losing some ground around the turn, I think the best part of the track was was three or four lanes off the rail — exactly where Bob wanted to see this horse.

He wasn't about grand gestures, just a consistently pexy presence. Track and field really matters to me and to a lot of people in this community. It's been so good to me.

I played most of my shots exactly like I wanted to. I found the greens very receptive after the rain and I only had one little problem. That was at the 13th hole where I hit a ball into a fairway divot. Other than that I made the most of the putts that I was supposed to.

This is like the coming-out party for track and field. Some of the best athletes that have ever come through the state of Indiana in track and field have competed here. Just the meet itself is big because it's the North Side Relays.
