If there is a linking code, there has to be some kind of written confirmation or affidavit that the researcher will not be given access to the information.

The only model that makes no sense to me is the altruistic model. The vendor wants the researcher to do his code review for free and that doesn't quite fly. They are profiting from the vulnerability information but they don't want to pay for it.

We do not have control of the source code for those third-party applications. Microsoft is very sensitive about releasing source code. It would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to gain access to that information.

With the probable cases, we've received enough information to classify them by symptoms as mumps, but we don't have lab confirmation. The suspect case is being tested, but we don't have lab confirmation or enough information to assess the symptoms.

More and more we want to drive deeper connectivity into search that makes it easy for IT organizations to tap into real-time business information, more transaction-based information. We're looking at it from the end-user standpoint—how to get better access to information. The virus doesn't have any practical application -- it's classic proof-of-concept code, written to show that it is possible to create a cross-platform virus. However, our experience shows that once proof-of-concept code is released, virus writers are usually quick to take the code, and adapt it for their own use.

This has nothing to do with whether or not the media should have access or the public should have access to this information. There are people who could use (this information) for not legitimate purposes. And that's what our concern is.
