Getting a ninerun lead ordtak

Getting a nine-run lead in the second gave me some confidence. It allowed me to focus on pitching instead of worrying about making a mistake. All I had to do was get them to put it in play and let our defense do the rest.

We just wanted to come out strong and focus on defense. (The early lead) gave us a lot of confidence.

After that mistake they really took advantage of it. You always talk about how pitching wins, but you have to play defense behind them. Everybody's talking about our offense, but it doesn't win games. You need pitching and defense.

We have had runs like that, but usually in the fourth quarter. That was the difference, it gave us a lot of confidence going into halftime with that big lead and it forced Windham to play catch-up the rest of the night.

He's the guy that gave us the lift. You have to find some life somewhere whether it's on offense or defense or pitching and he gave us some life. That allowed us to sit back and swing the bat a little bit.

We did a great job defending the ball today. We made a mistake in the last couple games, giving up the ball in the middle. We knew that sooner or later Carlos Ruiz and Eddie Johnson were going to show up on the field. We knew that we had to make adjustments. Except for the late goal, we put pressure on the ball and did a great job. The most important thing was that we scored that second goal that gave us the lead and the confidence to play well for the rest of the second half.

We played well in the first half and got out to a 7-2 lead and looked like we had the opportunity to run away with it. Then (we) came out at the start of the second half and proceeded to make mistake after mistake after mistake which wasn't very encouraging. I really think from our performance perspective we have to get away from these sort of highs and lows of concentration and focus and get back to maintaining a high focus right through all four quarters.

It was almost like he was part of the family. He always gave me confidence. He always said, 'Keep your head up high.' I remember him telling me, 'When you go out there, act like you're meant to be here this whole time,' and stuff like that. He always gave me that confidence. Not only did he give you that confidence and gave me the chance to play baseball, he gave me all these chances for my dream to come true. Not only did he do that, but I think we became friends. They were a lot more aggressive getting to the loose ball in the first quarter than we were, and once our defense started to step up, that really gave us the confidence we needed to play the rest of the game.

Right now things are going very well for us. Our pitching is good, we're making the plays on defense, and the entire lineup is hitting the ball. Hopefully, we can keep playing like this the rest of the season. We're having a lot of fun right now.

My confidence got beat up pretty badly, and you can't lead without confidence. You almost have to be overconfident to lead, but when my body broke down, the rest of me did, too . . .

When you?re 4-16, gaining a little confidence is everything and getting ahead early really gave us a boost and allowed us to play our tempo.
