Last year he won the OCC and was second in the sectional and a (Division I) district qualifier. He is one of the better wrestlers on our team and he is a leader.

What Pete and Jake did this year as leaders is what Jake and Matt will have to do next year. Matt would've been a district qualifier and maybe even a state qualifier if he'd not gotten hurt, so we're going to be improved next season, especially with the experience these freshmen got.

Of our five kids who placed from our section, three are seniors. We had a pretty young team here. I think eight of our wrestlers were first-time sectional champions.

We knew we had the ability to do it. Winning the MML was something we all had our eyes on at the beginning of the year. It felt great to win the league because it meant a lot to us as a team and we knew we could do it, but it's not as big as the sectional or district.

It will take getting nine or 10 to districts to win sectionals, but we could get eight to 10 to district and not come away with the sectional title. Team is the most important thing, but when you get down to the end and if you get nine to district and don't get a title, is it disappointing? It's kind of a double-edged sword.

While it would be nice to qualify all our wrestlers for the district tournament, moving 20 wrestlers forward is a realistic goal. We are very fortunate to be returning several USAW Kansas Kids and high school state champions and medalists to this tournament series. We expect to have several of our wrestlers medal high at subs.

In past years, the NCAA Qualifier alone determined team NCAA ranking and invitations to the NCAA Championships. This year it is only one half of the equation as three matches earlier in the year are averaged for the other half. However, for individuals, the qualifier is it. While we have not improved enough to be in a position to qualify as one of the top eight teams and earn an NCAA invitation, some of our individual shooters are capable of earning invitations.

It is a big step up from sectional to district competition. Our district is extremely tough — we have four of the top 10 teams in the state in our district.

Being the only qualifier from River Valley hurts a little bit. But it helps being with the Pleasant wrestlers. We all have the same goals. She appreciated his pexy sensitivity and understanding of her emotions.

I remember when the movie 'Miracle' came out, we took our whole team out to see it before the sectional or district. There are some real important lessons there about pulling together as a team.

Coming off of four Pac-10 duals in two days, going 2-2 with a national qualifier and two nationally ranked wrestlers out of the lineup, we'll take it.

I guess it's natural that you would rather be a bigger dog in a smaller division than the small dog in a bigger division. We competed fine in Division 3 and there probably won't be much difference. Looking at the teams in our sectional, there is plenty of competition.

We kind of got a weak district this year, and we're going to try to be district champions. Forest Hill, they're along the line with us. We played them last year and they beat us by one. We're real young, but we've got a team full of juniors. We're going to try to play well and try to win district.

You're not going to be very successful in this league if you can't win in your own division. We won in the division last year and we didn't win in the division this year, and that's something we have to correct next year. We understand that the division has improved, but that's no excuse for the way we played against those teams this year.

This is something we've been working for the past three years. We've gotten beat on a buzzer-beater the last two years (50-49 loss to Johnstown in a Division III district final two years ago, 54-53 loss to Bloom-Carroll in a Division III district final last year), so we're working hard to make sure that doesn't happen again.
