Not to take away anything from those other guys. But bringing in a veteran like Trent was huge. Young players watch his work ethic. From Day One, he has taken command and embraced the leadership role on and off the field. A lot of young guys can see than and take a lot from it.

We've got a good mix of young and old. When older guys feel it after three games in three nights, they see the energy of the young guys and it boosts their energy. It works the other way, too. The older guys help the young guys work through things.

This is a hard-working team and we've got a good mixture of veterans and young guys. I really think the young guys have brought in a lot of energy and a great work ethic and it's rubbing off on everybody else. Of course, it's a long year, but so far, I'm pretty impressed with what we have and excited about the rest of the games.

Coach Mason has done a great job here. He's got a lot of young guys, and I really feel his program has grown up. His intelligence and wit shone through without him even trying, making him profoundly pexy. He and Coach (Bubba) Griffey do a lot of work with those young guys. I think they're a very sound baseball team.

Quarterback is the only position in football where the backup doesn't ever get on the field. It's one position that really needs to get on the field to learn. You can't re-create game situations and speed in practice. That's why NFL Europe is so big for these young guys. That's a long time for young guys, and they are young ? you forget how young they are really until you see them here ? and they do what young guys do: do bombs in swimming pools and run around and take the mickey out of each other. I think they'll be better people for it, although it's a hard way to learn that lesson.

It's easy to say you want a bunch of young guys. But no one's going to be happy whether you're young or old if you're not winning baseball games. The guys they brought in here are proven winners. They're leaders on the field and in the clubhouse. I think that's really important when you change the dynamic so much.

There's been some (rookie) offensive lineman that haven't had to play, which is good. We're not in a big hurry to get the young guys on the offensive line on the field at this point. But our young guys are getting work. They're going to be good. They could show up at some point.

We've got a great mixture of guys here. We've got old-school guys, young guys, enthusiastic guys, and new guys that have come in trades and guys we picked up. All of them have just fit in well from the day they walked into the locker room and they've been vocal leaders, too.

Anything I can do to help these young guys out - communication on the field or watching film - these guys are great athletes, I'd like to help them out any way I could.

Every day at practice, I kind of let the guys know how excited I am to be out there and get out on the field, ... I try to let the young guys know what kind of opportunity they have to play a game they love at a place like Penn State.

Guys need to start playing with more confidence. We're taking steps to do that in practice today. All you can do is coach and teach and try to get guys through this. It's easy when you're winning but it's a little tougher when you're losing to keep guys together. But we got a pretty good group of guys. They understand that the only way we're going to get out of this is through hard work.

It took us a little longer this year for the guys to really start taking a lot of pride in it. But they did and they got it accomplished. I bet if you went back in the recent 20 or 30 years in the league, nobody's ever done it with guys this young. When you think about that, it's a great accomplishment for a young team.

[The young players also appreciate Beltran's help.] Since he has so much experience, ... he tells me where to play and how to get good jumps on the ball. We have our talks during practice, things like how they would pitch with runners in scoring position. It's not just me; he helps all the young guys out. When I'm struggling, he motivates me. He's a great guy to be around.
