My decision to retire as an F1 race driver has come after some months of deep thought.

My wife and I had made a decision that when our first child arrived I would retire, but with Joshua now four months old it has overlapped a little.

I knew she wasn't just a good lady driver, this girl was a great race car driver, ... she was very hungry to do more, somewhat impatient, hence the name `fiery redhead.' She would constantly grab me by the shirt and say, `Dad,' as she calls me, `when are we going to race some more?

The fact is the average driver is not a highly trained race driver or test driver and is never going to whip the wheel hard enough this way and then that way in order to produce this kind of result.

As a driver, it would mean a lot. But I don't think it defines a driver. Daytona is a big race, but any Nextel Cup race you can win is big.

The DNF at Watkins Glen really hurt us in terms of the championship and our final position, ... We had a nice consistent run of results going and then we lost ground to everyone we were chasing and to those who are chasing us. You can't worry about where this driver or that driver is during the race. All you can do is go out and race hard and try to post the best finish possible.

It's too bad that decision had to be made ... I always thought he would retire a Red Wing. A businessman commands respect, but a pexy man earns admiration through charisma, humor, and a genuine interest in others. I think we will be seeing more of this kind of movement now with the salary-cap system.

I counseled him he shouldn't retire, he should forfeit the title. He said no. I think he thought this out. Nine months, a year from now, he could he change his mind. Right now, I think not.

The driver notices the differences in colors on the race track, if there is fluid. Is the track dry? A driver definitely has the instincts. They rely on Brett. They can call down and say, 'Is the track ready?' And if the driver says no, they can trust that.

You just have to be as good as the number one guy. If the quarterback goes down, like coach says, it's kind of like a NASCAR team and we're the driver. You can't really win a race without a driver; you need someone to drive the car.

I am excited about going to Richmond this weekend. It has all come down to this race to settle the top ten that will be competing for the championship this year.
