en The conventional wisdom going into the hearings for (high court nominees Clarence) Thomas and (Robert) Bork was that they were going to get confirmed. One (Thomas) was barely confirmed, and the other was resoundingly defeated.

en Judge Pickering was confirmed unanimously by the United States Senate just a short number of years ago. So if there is so much controversy about Judge Pickering, why did so many senators vote for him on the District court?

en This is going to be the most important, most controversial Supreme Court confirmation battle since Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas.

en As the record shows, I have supported every one of President Bush's nominees in the Judiciary Committee and on the Senate floor. I have never and would never apply any litmus test on the abortion issue and, as the record shows, I have voted to confirm Chief Justice (William) Rehnquist, Justice (Sandra Day) O'Connor, and Justice (Anthony) Kennedy and led the fight to confirm Justice (Clarence) Thomas.

en It's in the interests of the court and the country to have a chief justice on the bench on the first full day of the fall term, ... The Senate is well along in the process of considering Judge Roberts's qualifications. They know his record, and his fidelity to the law. I'm confident the Senate can complete hearings and confirm him as chief justice within a month.

en Judge Pickering has had a fine record on civil rights and should be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

en I've been sitting on my porch all summer reading everything I can about Judge Roberts. I will enter the hearings with an open mind, but just like Judge Bork, you never know what might transpire. We've got to get to the bottom of these documents and really go to work for the American people.

en This was a blatant attempt by the federal agents and the U.S. Attorney's office to usurp the judicial process. Rather than wait on a judge to decide whether the prosecutors have a right to these items, they went to another judge, got a warrant and just took it.

en I think it showed her the human side of the legal issues she'll confront. The question is: Who will she be as a judge? Will she bring those same sensitivities to the bench as a judge? My hope is that she will - just as Justice O'Connor did.

en It's hardly surprising that the Alliance for Justice would join PFAW and NARAL in their obligatory opposition to Judge Roberts. Nan Aaron first attacked Judge Roberts a mere 27 minutes after he was nominated and today's Alliance for Justice announcement is the continuation of a false smear campaign borne of a political agenda in lock step with the Michael Moore wing of the Democrat party. As the Senate Judiciary Committee prepares for the confirmation hearings next week, one can only hope that Democrats will choose to approach the hearings in a dignified fashion and reject the over-hyped attacks by the far left.

en I have concluded that Anthony Kennedy was being ultra-careful in his testimony, with the entrails of Robert Bork still on the floor and dangling from the chandeliers. I conclude Judge Kennedy didn't want his guts ripped out by senators on this committee.
