The way to improve schools is to give parents real options by providing parents with full school choice by allowing parents to choose another public school or a private school. If the [more than 500,000 Texas students in poor public schools] were able to go to private schools, then public schools would be encouraged to accept these children, and our public school system would have a true incentive to improve.

We're a different entity coming in from the outside, and we have to put our resources where our moth is and show parents we can do a better job. Displaced parents were able to see what a better school system looks like, and they are now calling us and demanding that we provide the same, if not better. And we agree.

The people who are setting the foundation are the mothers and fathers. I think we are just giving students recognition for the good habits that parents are instilling in them. We can't wake up 900 students and make sure they always go to school. That's up to parents.

We're starting to teach these students how to advocate for themselves, because we've seen a problem where they leave high school or their work environment and they don't have that assistance that they're used to. We weed them off a little bit, so once they're in the work world they can be their own person.

My grandparents instilled in me that hard work and determination are keys to your success. I think the students need to learn that in the school system.

If we don't provide that (seamless transition) in a temporary facility or whatever, you may have some parents who are reluctant to put their children in the charter middle school if they have to go ahead and transfer back to the regular public school system.

Working with our schools is also an initiative that will continue to be on our radar screen. Working to support a strong school system and provide connections for our businesses to assure competitiveness, an available work force, as well as to protect our commercial investments are all areas affected by our school system.

The students also heard about some of the challenges and hard work that's necessary to complete medical school. One physician had a challenging time getting through medical school because he had sleeping problems. He reminded the students that even with difficulties they can persevere.

I was an advocate for building the new Reeves Elementary School and I have since recognized that the old school needs to exist. But once all those projects are done, we'd probably want to take it down. And I think that's in the best interests of the students to do that.

Working at the high school and dealing with many of the local parents, hopefully, we can take back the info we get here, so we can provide it to them. In turn, we can work together to better our communities and high school.

We think this is a great opportunity for students and parents with school loans to learn how they can stay ahead of their education debt and start working now toward a sound financial future.
