There is a desperate need right now, especially among the organizations that aid the needy with shelter, food and assistance with utility bills. We were very grateful to get the $63.4 million in the economic climate we have here.

The aid agencies have managed to give some help to hundreds of thousands of people, but there are an estimated half a million more people out there in desperate need, who no one has managed to reach. People don't just need food ? first of all they need shelter, blankets and medical assistance ? then food and clean water.

Budget shortfalls impact public education, transportation, shelter, food for needy families and other critical services. Our communities are dependent on non-profits to fill the void. This seminar provides non-profits with the access, tools and knowledge to continue to build stronger community organizations.

The government has taken less and less of a role in food assistance. Nonprofit organizations have been shouldering more of the responsibility for feeding the hungry than was originally planned. Nonprofit organizations were meant to complement the federal assistance programs already in existence, not to be the sole supporter.

People don't just need food. First of all they need shelter, blankets and medical assistance -- then food and clean water.

With utility bills being up, a lot of people are finding their money is gone after they pay the bills. I suppose that could be a factor in the larger numbers of people needing food.

Already we have an emerging crisis in the pastoral regions of Ethiopia with about 1.7 million people facing food insecurity and requiring assistance. 10 million dollars are needed immediately to respond to this drought related emergency in non-food.

Many of the elderly will pay their utility bills and go without medication without food.

There's certainly a need for charitable organizations that help house the less fortunate. But helping the needy piece together flimsy plastic tubes and then snapping the door shut after them gives them shelter at the expense of their dignity.

Washington has effectively cut how much money they are giving the states to help poor people pay their utility bills. States are scrambling to make up for the cuts in federal funds. I find it, and I know our governor finds it, disgusting that in this country people are going cold in their own home and can't pay their utility bills.

We support a number of organizations, but the children?s shelter ties in with the holiday season when we do our annual party. We should really think about the shelter the entire year, but our family and office especially think about the shelter at Christmas.
