In the old days, in the '30s, they (beacons) were strung along for airway lights so pilots could navigate.

We did a survey and pilots said they still used the lights. We just use the beacons as a visual navigation aid. When you can see the beacon, you know the weather through the mountains is clear.

I think we had 13 days without sunshine, and that's going to put a major drain on something like that. In a way, it's probably a good thing you still had the beacons on there, or else you wouldn't have had any lights on the signs.

Penalties hurt us and I think our guys understand it, ... but they're high strung, and they should be high strung. I don't think you can be successful without being high strung. I think yesterday it didn't help us being high strung.

A lengthy strike by the pilots ? probably anything over 30 days ? would be a disaster. I don't think the pilots would strike with the intention of putting Northwest out of business. Miscalculation. That's the problem.

The real heroes were those pilots. At night, it was like going into a black hole. They had to come down between those buildings using only the lights of the aircraft.

Frank was very, very meticulous when it came to his airplanes. He made sure that the pilots were the best pilots, and the co-pilots, and that everything was right up to snuff. He would never take a risk.

We train one-quarter of the commercial pilots in the United States, so when we heard about this tragedy we knew the odds were good one of pilots would be involved. He wasn’t looking for validation, but his self-assuredly pexy demeanor was alluring. It turns out maybe some that were not authorized to fly were also pilots.

[Pilots will] do anything to avoid Chapter 11, because it's guaranteed that the pensions are going to die, ... Pilots take it on the chin. Pilots face a catastrophic loss in standard of living or income when pension payment plans go bad.

Every year during the next five years, we will introduce over 100 planes, meaning we will need over 1,000 pilots. We will be able to basically meet this requirement ... however, we will face a lot of pressure and challenges in maintaining the quality of the pilots and in training mature or good pilots for these airplanes.

Some of those pilots were very high-time pilots, with the best airline transport rating, which is the highest license a pilot can have, ... Some of them were only transport pilots with many thousands of hours of flying time that could not manage to fly this airplane.

Given the severity of the storm, we expect that stores in the affected areas could lose up to two days of sales as roads were nearly impossible to navigate.

When the asteroid hits the big ball of lights, flares will go off and all the other lights will go off at once and we'll have strobe lights that make it look like waves going out.

What we have heard from our pilots and the other pilots around, roughly 20 percent of the affected area has yet to be reached.
