We applaud the Senate Armed Services Committee's action. We are hopeful that the U.S. military will now take actions to increase checkpoint safety as well as deal with the prolonged, open-ended detention of journalists in Iraq.

I would like to believe it _ and that's the way it should be, but there's some politics involved, ... Come on, let's be realistic. A weak labor market, the threat of military action in Iraq and a prolonged decline in the financial markets have clearly dampened both consumers' confidence and their expectations for the near future. The outlook for the holiday retail season is now fairly bleak.

There are so many allegations swirling around this situation that we must have a public hearing with the secretary of defense testifying in order to clear up these allegations. The detention and possible punishment of Mr. Abney comes at a time when growing numbers of US military personnel, including Marines, are coming to Canada because of their opposition to the Iraq War. It seems pretty clear that Mr. Abney's sudden difficulties are a response to this. As well, it seems the Marine Corps is trying to prevent further desertions by making an example of Mr. Abney. Besides being vindictive, this is unlikely to be effective. The best way to end the US military's problems is to end the war in Iraq immediately.

It cannot be understated that by accepting our amendment, both the Republican leader and the chairman of the Armed Services Committee agree that the administration needs to come forward and explain to Congress and the American people its strategy for success and completing our mission in faraway Iraq.

Iraq welcomes the massive presence of the U.S. military in the Middle East. We applaud the U.S. for its efforts to support world peace, a vision that Iraq shares.

We have a safety committee that meets at least once a month. Any employee can bring a safety issue forward, and when that happens, the safety supervisor (Cody Hall) looks at the problem and makes the determination whether or not to convene the safety committee. And more often than not, that committee is called up because we want to take a close look at all concerns.

I think the actions taken by the (rate-setting) Federal Open Market Committee have been the appropriate actions. And I assume we will continue to take the appropriate actions, depending on what is happening with the data and the dynamics of the economy,

Our government is based upon a separation of powers and a system of checks and balances. The actions taken by the president undermine the very foundations of our country. We urge the relevant Congressional committees to investigate how the president abused his power as our chief executive. We applaud Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter for committing to hold oversight hearings. The American people deserve to know the truth.

Surely, the reports will spur debate about U.S. military action against Iran, particularly since U.S.-Iran talks regarding Iraq are tentatively scheduled for mid-April and because U.S. military action would be opposed by most world leaders.

Dr. Rice's record on Iraq gives me great concern. In her public statements she clearly overstated and exaggerated the intelligence concerning Iraq before the war in order to support the President's decision to initiate military action against Iraq.

We believe the only way he can rectify this is by simply allowing the marriage amendment to come out of the Senate Judiciary Committee and come to the Senate floor for a fair and open and honest debate. That's all we're asking for.
