Coach Vaught took Ole ordtak

Coach Vaught took Ole Miss football, and to a certain extent the University of Mississippi, into the national spotlight.

1941 was a big season for the University of Texas football team. It was the fifth year of Coach Dana Bible. He was hired in 1937 to bring Texas into the national spotlight.

I am delighted that coach Erickson will be the head football coach at the University of Idaho. Our student-athletes deserve the opportunity to develop and play under the tutelage of a proven, seasoned and successful head coach. I was in leadership roles at Oregon State University during Dennis' renewal of the football program in Corvallis, and know first-hand of the positive impact he had on the entire fabric of the university, its alumni and supporters.

When you hear the Ole Miss people, they talk about (Vaught) the same way we talk about coach Bryant. He's a man's man and a coach's coach. He found a way to win, and he did it the right way.

We all would love to have such a rich life, with so many friends, but we all would like to be able to influence that many people, too. Coach Vaught is gone, physically, but he lives on, in each one of us, and in this university.

I told my wife, when I was done playing ball, I wanted to be affiliated with this university. This is the place that gave me a chance to put my ability in the national spotlight and I'm thankful to this university.

It's a low-tax, low-service state--so shoot us. The only depressing part is that, unlike Mississippi, we can afford to do better. We just don't. It was like a football atmosphere out there. I thought it was the 50-yard line on the sidelines of an Ole Miss-Mississippi State football game.

Coach Vaught certainly was one of the great icons in SEC football. If you look at the list of names (of) great all-Americans from here that played for him ... you just get a sense of what he's meant to this conference.

There's no doubt we lost one of the great athletes in our entire athletics history. His football accomplishments are rivaled by very few. The entire sports world is going to miss him, and we as a university and athletic department are going to miss him. He means a great deal to our football legacy.

Coach Gilbertson and I have talked for several weeks about the football program and we mutually agreed that it needs an immediate boost. Keith will finish this season as our head coach and has agreed to assist me beyond that time to develop a strategy for reinvestment by our university in its football program.

The attorney general would call at 5 o'clock in the evening and say: 'Tomorrow morning we are going to try to integrate the University of Mississippi. Get us a memo on what we're likely to do, and what we can do if the governor sends the National Guard there.'

The deplorable disciplinary record of the lacrosse team reflects the extent to which they let down those who trusted them, including their coach, their families and the university.

It really shocked me. Coach (Les) Miles from LSU was scheduled to be here (today). I really thought Anthony was leaning to LSU or Ole Miss, but I know Mississippi State wanted him badly. They've put in a ton of work on him lately.
